Syros Westra Obituary

Syros Westra, passed peacefully into the arms of his loving Savior at his home in Ontario, at the age of 87. Sy was born in Randolph, Wisconsin growing up on the family dairy farm. He attended Calvin College in Michigan, where he met his wife, Janice. They moved to Bellflower, California in 1965 to teach at Valley Christian Junior High. After receiving his master's degree from Long Beach State in 1970, they moved to the Chino Valley where they raised their four children. He loved his 30+ year career as a school psychologist in the Upland School District. He and Jan were also charter members of Calvary/CrossPoint Christian Reformed Church where he served numerous terms as deacon and elder. He also served on the boards of Inland Christian Home and Salem Christian Homes. In retirement, Sy continued to enjoy his church, family, garden, and travels.Sy was a proud veteran, serving in the Army as a medic. He was buried with military honors at the Riverside National Cemetery earlier this month. He leaves behind his wife, Janice, and four children: Todd (Joan) Westra, Brent (Candy) Westra, Sheila (Jared) Kerney, Allison Wade; 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at CrossPoint Christian Reformed Church, in Chino, at 11:00 a.m. on July 22, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to CrossPoint CRC, Ontario Christian Schools, Salem Christian Homes, or Inland Christian Home.
