HARRY RAM

Harry Ram, 85 of El Centro, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in ECRMC.
He was born January 15, 1928 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Kahn Pori Ram born in India and Mother Evangelina Bonsall born in New Mexico; and brothers, John, Frank, and Henry Ram.
Harry is survived by his wife Dorothy Atwood Ram of El Centro; sister, Esther Ram of Seattle, Washington; sons, Larry and Douglas Ram of El Centro; granddaughter, Cristina Ram of El Centro; grandson, Robert Ram of El Monte; and great-grandson, Giovanni Running Bear Lopez of El Centro, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
At a young age his family moved to the Imperial Valley. He graduated from Central Union High School and IVC. Harry joined the Air Force in 1950 and was an Aircraft Radio Electronics Mechanic. He go out in 1953 because they wanted him to go to Texas to teach math to service men since he was so good at it. He married Dorothy Atwood June 8, 1957 in El Centro. There were married 56 years.
He was employed by Valley Auto Supply. He started as a shipping and welding supply truck driver and would drive to San Diego to pick up oxygen and acetylene and other gases. He was promoted to Purchasing Manager, then Assistant General Manager until he took over as Calexico Store Manager and worked there until he retired after 36 years. Harry was active in Little League Baseball as manager and coach, as well as a football referee during football season. He was a dedicated lifetime member of the American Legion Post 25 in El Centro for 51 years and held office positions of Post Commander, District 30 Commander, 5 Area vice Commander, and most of the other post 25 positions of office.
A memorial will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall Post 25 in El Centro. A graveside service is pending and he will be buried at Fort Rosecrans Veterans Cemetery on Point Loma in San Diego.

I was fortunate to live 2 doors from Mr.Ram in El Centro. He was a wonderful neighbor and a kind gentlemen who was always ready to lend a helping hand. His passing is truly sad.

When my sister and I were little, Harry would take us to San Diego on his "run" and my grandparents would meet him and pick us up for our visit. My dad was very fond of him, and I thought he was "really special". Really good memories as he treated us like "people" instead of just kids!
