JOSE SANDOVAL Obituary

Surrounded by family and friends from all over the world, Jose Ygnacio Anguiano Sandoval passed away in Santa Ana, California on November 15, 2015. Jose was born to Juan and Esther Sandoval on January 22, 1946 and was one of six children. He attended Miguel Hidalgo School and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1965. As a young man he attended Imperial Valley College and worked to support his studies at local grocery stores and picking grapes each summer in Delano, Ca. His family considers him the role model who paved the way to higher education, encouraging going to college before it was the norm. Jose encouraged all his siblings and nieces and nephews to attend college and would attend all graduations as special events. He soon transferred to San Diego State University where he majored in the sciences receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. As a science major he worked in a specimen lab with one of his college professors who was studying spiders, particularly black widow spiders. Having been raised in Brawley Jose knew well the ever-present black widow spider and soon the professor and his team would come with Jose to the Imperial Valley to collect specimens unlike any they had ever seen before. Upon graduation from SDSU Jose joined the Peace Corps where he served in Sarawak, Borneo. He worked abroad helping people outside the United States while learning the culture of the people he helped and trained. It was this period of study in Jose's life that led to a respect of the Asian culture, prompting multiple visits to Asia during his lifetime. His most recent visit was in the late spring of 2015 where Jose helped organized a fiftieth reunion for all his former students and families. During his final year in the Peace Corps Jose applied to medical school upon his completion of service in Borneo. When he returned he entered UCLA School of Medicine in 1971. Jose was a Bruins fan and friends and family will display their Bruin spirit at his services. Jose went on to practice medicine and became a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He was responsible for training doctors to serve in diverse communities. In his lifetime Jose Sandoval received multiple awards for his dedication and service to diverse populations in particular to the Latino community. Jose will always be remembered for his dedication and respect to both his patients and his students. He instilled in his students through teaching and mentorships a sensitivity and respect for the culture and language of their patients. Jose was known for his volunteer work working free clinics and even after retirement he volunteered 2-3 days per week at the Family Health Clinic in Santa Ana, Ca. Jose enjoyed spending time relaxing in the San Bernardino mountains. He also had several hobbies including photography and collecting family history. The hobby he was most famous for was gardening. A visit with Jose was a walk through his garden where he spent much of his free time. Jose Y. Anguiano Sandoval was preceded in death by his parents and siblings John, George, and Carmen Sandoval. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susana Canett-Sandoval; sisters, Celia Sandoval Santana, Christine Sandoval Pistel, and his nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 at Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary, Waverly Chapel 1702 Fairhaven Ave. Santa Ana, Ca. Mass will be held at 10 a.m, Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Saint Anne's Church 1344 S. Main Street, Santa Ana, Ca.

Dr. Sandoval impacted my life during my educational journey at UCI. He mentored so many of us, students, by offering his words of wisdom, sharing his own experiences of pursuing his goals in a time of cultural changes. and By leading by example. His passion for medicine was driven by his lifelong commitment to improving people's lives, which he worked tirelessly on achieving during his lifetime.

I have many fond memories of Dr. Sandoval. He leaves a legacy of thousands of students, now physicians, whose lives he touched by mentoring and guidance. He and his beautiful wife Susana were gracious hosts whenever anyone visited their beautiful home. He leaves very big shoes to fill in the community that he loved and served. May your garden grow beautifully in heaven Jose and may you Rest in Peace! Con mucho cariño.
