It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and Ret. Police Chief Pompeyo R. Tabarez Sr. Pompeyo passed away on June 13, 2024, in the company of his wife, Norma A. Tabarez and family.

Pompeyo R. Tabarez was born to Pompeyo C. Tabarez and Antonia L. Rocha on April 1, 1957, in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

After many years of struggles, Pompeyo met Norma A. Soto (Tabarez) in Mexicali, Mexico, and they started the transition to the United States, where they eventually married. He started his law enforcement career with the Calexico Police Department, Imperial Police Department, Westmorland Police Department, Imperial County Sheriff's Office, and finally ended his combined 40 plus years of law enforcement experience with the Calexico Police Department as Chief of Police.

Throughout Pompeyo and Norma's early life challenges, they were blessed with 7 loving children: Pompeyo Jr., Isacc, Nadia, and Norma. Veronica, Ezequiel and Isaias. Of whom all became productive professionals in the community along with 17 grandchildren: Pompeyo A., Giovanni, Isacc A., Yolanda C., Elvia, Danisa, Keila, Bailey, Sophrionia, Jenavey, Angelo, Jayden, Giabella, Ezekiel Z., Jayson, Aubrey, and Danica. Pompeyo and Norma were a part of many community organizations such as football, wrestling, teaching, political groups, church groups and many others to improve the quality of life for Imperial Valley residents.

Viewing services will be held on July 1, 2024, from 6-9 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Imperial, CA. Funeral services will be on July 2, 2024, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in El Centro followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Pompeyo. I had not heard and would have been there to pay his respect to the family I know he cared to much about. Pompeyo was one of the coaches of Mid Valley Pop Warner for several years when I was in charge. May he rest in peace.

My father was a great man, husband, father, grandfather coach, teacher, mentor and so much to many. He once told me that a man should never pat themselves on their back or celebrate their accomplishments until they are buried so that no one can ever challenge it. There is always good things and bad things people can say about any person, but at the end of their lives we will know how great they were. My father was a great person of great values and morals. He said if all we have to eat is beans and rice, than that is what we will eat and we will continue to go forward. He never asked for much other than for us to be educated and caring people. He wanted us to strive for being healthy and to live a great life. He reached many goals and I thank him for that, because he challenged us all to do the most that we could and to become better humans. I love and I miss you father. Thank you for everything you did for us and for pushing us to be the best that we could. We really couldn't be where we are without you. As you always told me in your lectures, you never had a playbook on being a father because your father died before you were born, but dang you did an awesome job of motivating us. We love and Miss you.

To the Tabarez Family:
Please accept my sincerest condolences regarding the passing away of Pompeyo Sr. He was a really good man who loved his family and was truly dedicated to his work in law enforcement. But I mostly remember him as a part of our wrestling program at Central and then at Southwest. I recall him warming up Pompeyo Junior before a match and also helping out in our practices. One memory I had was Coach Weldon, Coach Henry Zamarripa, Pompeyo and I having a few beers one night after a match and listening to wrestling stories, mostly pretty funny stuff. Again, my sympathies to the family. Know that Pompeyo lived a good life.
