RACHEL POWERS Obituary
Aug. 17, 1936 – July 27, 2024
Rachel Higuera Powers passed away peacefully at home in the loving presence of her eldest son on July 27, 2024, at age 87. Rachel was born on August 17, 1936, in Holtville, California.
Rachel was a strong, vivacious woman with a flair for fashion coupled with a strong work ethic and sense of professionalism exhibited in her 29 years working in the Planning Department for the city of El Centro. A natural caregiver, Rachel also volunteered at the local hospital in her retirement years while adopting two rescue cats: Josie and Lucy. Staying fit was an essential part of Rachel's life, evident in her years of participating in workout classes along with her long walks through local neighborhoods and parks. Rachel also embraced her spiritual life as a devout Catholic and dedicated member of St. Mary's Church in El Centro. Rachel was very outgoingfully embracing life with her love of music and dancing. She will forever be known for her sweet sense of humor, beautiful smile, and kind nature. As the heart and soul of our family, Rachel will be missed dearly. A devoted mother, she dedicated much of her life in raising and caring for her two sons, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, leaving a legacy of unconditional love and serving as a role model of a strong, independent woman to her family. Rachel will remain in her family's hearts forever.
She is survived by her sister, Helen Montoya; brother, Miguel Higuera; and sister-in-law, Yolanda Higuera; sister, Isabel Flores; son, William "Bill" Powers III; son, Casey Powers; and daughter-in-law, Nanci Powers; grandchildren: Rachel (and Osvaldo) Antunez, Quinn Powers, William "Bear" Powers IV, and Zoe Powers; great-grandchildren: Mateo and Camilla Antunez. Rachel was preceded in death by the father of her children, Bill Powers, and her longtime partner, Emilio Guerra.
Services will be held on August 24, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 795 S La Brucherie Road, El Centro, CA 92243. Mass begins at 10 a.m.

Remembering my co-worker and friend. We would participate in the yearly March of Dimes walk and the BLM hiking group. We learned to use the first office computers replacing our old IBM typewriters; that was quite a challenge in our times. RIP my dear friend.

So sad to hear of your beautiful mons passing. I visited her and told her I was going to bright her steamed vegetables and Chinese food from China Palace. We would do breakfast or lunch a few times. I was the third wheel. She died before I went back. Find strength in knowing she is in A more beautiful place. God Bless, Lori Salazar Taylor

I worked with Rachel at the city of El centro for over 20 years. She always wore her hair so neat and dressed impeccable. We used to participate in the annual march of dimes walkathon and loved dancing with her and Emilio . Memories in participating in the BLM hikes were special . Bill Powers always came by city hall and made us laugh. Knowing your family was special to us. Our condolences to Billy, Casey and family.
