Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of David D. Finch US Army Private 1st Class. On December 9, 2010 I was going home on R&R from Iraq. All of us on that day couldn't wait to get home. The aircraft a C-130 had an American flag drape on a aluminum coffin. PFC Finch was on board with us. As we got on the aircraft and left Iraq nobody said a word. My combat boots toes rested against the coffin and thought how sorry I was for his family. We landed at the Kuwaiti Airport. There we got on off the aircraft and gave him a final salute as they carried him our aircraft and put him on a aircraft going back to USA. When Memorial Day comes in May I will remember PFC Finch and all the other young soldier who couldn't hug their families. I served in Iraq during his time there but didn't know him. But I will always have memories of that day. God bless his family for his loss.

Dear Finch family,

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. David will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you.

I salute you.

To the Finch Family
I had the pleasure of sharing many memories with Dustin over his four years as a student athlete at Bethel University. There is one memory of Dustin that I will never forget to this day. It is not a memory that has anything to do with football or even the school at all. We were in a defensive staff meeting and Dustin who was done playing for us came into our meeting with his then girlfriend. There was one thing about Dustin that I will never forget. He was a very proud yound man. He walked into that office and told us coaches that he decided to join the military. He was so proud, we all asked him about finishing school and he looked at us all and said, I love you guys and respect you, but it would mean everything to me to fight for my country and the freedoms I have had since I was a boy. As a person who watched Dustin grow as a young man at Bethel, to now a man standing in front of me telling me he was willing to fight for the freedoms I had and will continue to have. I could see a change in his eyes and knew that this was something his heart was more passionate about then anything. If you knew Dustin you knew he loved his family, his girlsfriend, who became his wife, and football. As he stood in front of me I could tell that he loved this more then football. That is my fondest memory of Dustin as a man that I am truly honored to have spend several years with in his time at Bethel. I am thankful for the freedoms I have everyday and thankful that Dustin was willing to give his life for me and all other Americans. I give my deepest sympathies to Dustin's wife, the rest of his family, and all the people of Humboldt. Dustin is a true American Hero and will never be forgotton by me and my family.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4

I know we have never met; I was informed of your loss by my sister in law, Mrs Jenna Cagle, Jackson TN. The loss of your loved one as he was serving his country, while certainly tragic, goes not unnoticed by the country he served. He rests in peace with others who have served so bravely, and unfortunately will welcome more. But this was his calling and I know you are proud of his accomplishments providing freedoms to the people of the world, while protecting us at home. I served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Bosnia and other far off places, over 30 years in all; therefore I know your pain and I encourage you to rejoice in this young man's courage. He will never be forgotten by America for his ultimate sacrifice, and you will never be forgotten for your sacrifice of this young soldier who has defended sacred freedoms we all continue to enjoy

Sincerely

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to PFC. David D. Finch our Brother-in-Arms . To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for David. And to David it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. David, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,335 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to David’s family and loved ones.
