Elizabeth Etheridge Obituary

Funeral services for Miss Elizabeth Etheridge 95 will be at 3:00 PM Sunday January 4 2004 in the Chapel of Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home with Dr. Hyran Barefoot and Dr. Chris Christina officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. Miss Etheridge a retired educator died Thursday morning at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Emerson and Alice Terrell Etheridge and received her early education in the local schools graduating from the former Jackson High School with honors in 1926. She earned a B.A. degree with honors from Union University in 1929 and later earned a Master's degree from Peabody College in Nashville in 1939. For some forty-two years she taught Spanish at the former Jackson High School along with classes in French and Latin. Miss Etheridge also designed and taught a Spanish program for elementary school children during the summer months. During World War II she served as the first paid director of the Junior Red Cross in Washington D.C. From 1963 until her retirement in 1973 she was Assistant Professor of Spanish at Union University and during this time also served as a sponsor for the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Miss Etheridge was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Youth Sunday School classes before her retirement. She is survived by her sister Ruby Hassell of Jackson; her niece Joyce Laycook and her great-nieces Melinda Jordan and Carol Emery all of Jackson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Fay Etheridge and a brother B. E. Etheridge. Pallbearers for the service will be Greg Jordan Van Emery Donald Jordan James Jordan Mike Walker and Dr. Harold Yarbro. The family requests memorials be made to the Fay and Elizabeth Etheridge Scholarship Fund at Union University. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 2:00 PM until the time of service.
