Edgar Cearley Obituary

Edgar Columbus "Ed" Cearley III went to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 22, 2008, in Marianna.
Born Aug. 3, 1947, in Houston, Texas, Ed graduated in 1965 from Waltrip High School. He attended Southwestern University, where he was a Phi Delta Theta, and in 1969, he graduated from the University of Texas.
Ed's career was in radio sales, marketing and management. He spent many happy years at KILT FM/AM in Houston, Texas, before moving to Longview, Texas, where he was general manager of KYKX.
At the time of his death, he was president and general manager of a group of stations that included WJAQ in Marianna.
Ed was passionate about his Texas Longhorns and attended National Football Championships of 1969, 1970 and 2005. But even the Longhorns took second place to the love he felt for family and friends. His children, parents, brother and large circle of friends always knew they could count on him for love, support and laughter. Ed was a York Rite Mason.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Cearley.
He is survived by his parents, Dot and Buster Cearley of Longview, Texas; daughter, Ginger Cearley, and son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Elizabeth Cearley, all of Houston. He was looking forward to the birth of his grandson in January.
A memorial service will be at the First United Methodist Church of Marianna, Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m., with Dr. Bob McKibben officiating.
Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.
James & Sikes Funeral Home - Maddox Chapel will direct.

I met Ed when I was just a child, about 5 years old. I havent seen him since I was 7. One time I told him something silly and childish and he just laughed back and made me feel okay for not knowing what I had said.
It always left an impression on me. Since then he has never forgotten a graduation or milestone of mine. I always got a card from him. Such a thoughtful man.

Few and far between are the people that make you smile by just walking into the room. Rarer still is the person that can keep that up for 20+ years (those that knew Ed earlier would likely add years to that total). Ed was responsible for, who knows, perhaps a million such smiles. And counting. Thinking of him still makes me smile.

So sorry about our loss. Ed was my best friend in junior high and high school and we were even roomates in college.Whether swimming lake Austin (yes we really did that)catching fish at cobblers castle,or preparing for a pep rally,Ed was always the inspiration and sense of humor. He was never without a smile. I am so proud to have known him. He made me a better human being.
I love you my friend and God bless your family.

Often in the mornings I would encounter Ed walking. He always had a smile and he always had kind words. He made many days start off bright for me. He loved his families - Family family, radio family, friends family and church family. There was no guessing if Ed was a Christian, he showed it with his actions. Many many people will miss you Ed. May the Lord be with all the Cearley family and the rest of Eds' families.

To the Cearley Family:
I am saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I too grew up with Ed, from our early days at Stevens Elementary School, all the way through graduation from Waltrip High in 1965. I will always remember Ed as the happy and energetic guy that he was. My thoughts are with the Cearley family....God Bless.

I had the pleasure of working with Ed as a GM in SunGroup (at Bryan & Pensacola) and had preceded him by a few years as GM at Marianna. Ed was not only a wonderful friend but also an outstanding broadcaster. He led his radio stations to great success and to rarely achieved levels of community leadership. And through it all made new friends on a daily basis. We will all miss him greatly, but will also carry a special part of his positive, uplifting spirit with us along the way. Thanks, Ed!

I still cant believe this has happened. Even though his time here on Earth has come and passed, he will be remembered by so many people. I love your family so much and I hope that you (Chris and Ginger) keep spreading the joy, love, compassion, friendliness, non judgemental, overflowing personality that your father displayed. He was an AMAZING man, and I am so sorry for your loss.

With all my love,

Our prayers are with you during this difficult time. We know you have suffered a great loss and we feel it too. When Ed was our GM in Longview it was a pleasure to come to work everyday. Big Ed. I can't believe you are gone. I first met Ed in the 80s and I adored this big man with the biggest heart in the world. UT had no bigger fan than this man. I'm sure you're up there getting ready for the season. Hook 'Em Horns!

For all the Cearley Family:
I graduated from Waltrip in '65 with Ed, and have seen him several times through the years at our reunions and he was always "our own personal DJ". He was always in good spirits and so I will always believe that God needed him now as his own personal DJ. I know it is very hard now the grief you are experiencing but perhaps you can find solace in knowing that his time with us (although it was too brief) it was always happy.

To Ed's family, particularly to his parents,
I was so saddened to hear of Ed's death last night. I got out my old photo albums, and there he was--in our first grade class photo at Steven's School. We shared so many formative years together. I haven't seen Ed, except for Waltrip class reunions, over the years, and missed the last one, so it has been a while. But I remember the good times we shared all through Stevens school days!
My sympathy and prayers to you,
Genie Hackenjos Butler

To the Cearley Family,
Ed was the dearest, kindest, most thoughtful man, and always a true & loyal friend. Although I had not seen Ed in a few years, we e-mailed each other almost every other day, and alot were "chatting about our lives" conversations. Mary Jo Prince was right--Ed's heart gave out because he was always giving it to his family & friends, --always caring & supporting. He was a very positive and Christian man. I am a better person for knowing Ed and calling him "my Friend!". We'll miss him, but know that the "Eyes of Texas" will ring louder in Heaven than ever before. God Bless all of you Cearley's.
Warmly, Patti Kay (Luers)

Ginger,
I am so terribly sorry to hear of your loss. I know you two were close and it was apparent that he adored you as much as you did him. I know his great character and positive outlook on life lives on in you which is apparent by the way you touch others as he has. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May God give you comfort and strength during this difficult time.
Love,
Monica

Ed Cearley was one of the two greatest men I will have have the pleasure to know. I always looked forward to each day that Ed was at the helm of our ship in Longview Texas. He was a great poker player... a not so great golfer... and always a gentleman. I will miss him. My thoughts are with the whole Cearley family.

I have not seen the Cearley family since our days in Waltrip High School, but remember each of you well. So well---with admiration and affection.
I send my heart felt sympathy to each of you during this difficult time-lifting you up in prayer for strength, peace of heart and mind during this very-very painful time.
I always enjoyed Ed's laughter and with the years remember it with great appreciation---life is so short. Ed and brother Steve are together once again.
God Be with you.

To the Cearley Family,
Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Ed was one of the most genuine, caring, and loving people I've ever known. His heart just gave out because it had been used so much to help and care about others. And I only hope he really knew how much others cared about him. I am so thankful for the time that God allowed Ed to be in my life. I never stopped loving him, and he will be in my heart forever. Ed, you wanted so badly to get back home to Texas, and now, you are, my friend. Enjoy your 50-yard-line seat in Austin on Thanksgiving Day this year! Welcome home, Ed, welcome home.
Love always,
Mary Jo
