Jeffrey L. Chalmers

Jeffrey L. "Jeff" Chalmers, 74, of Lafayette, passed away at home on Sunday, January 11, 2015. Born September 21, 1940 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Robert James and Marion Philimina (Panlener) Chalmers.

Jeff was a 1958 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. He honorably served in the Air Force after high school from 1958 to 1963 and he then served in the U.S. Army, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired in 1982 as Sgt. 1st Class after 20 years of total service.

Jeff married Mary Martin on February 15, 1975 in Lafayette and she survives. He worked as a route man and then in maintenance for the Lafayette and West Lafayette post offices. He was a former member of American Legion Post #11 and was active in the men's bowling league at Market Square Lanes and mixed bowling league at Arrowhead Bowling. He enjoyed all athletics at Lafayette Jefferson with his high school friends.

Surviving with his wife are five daughters, Sandy M. Hill (husband, Dan) of Lafayette, Lisa A. Kabbas of Coventry, RI, Channa D. Hammons of Lafayette, Christine D. Cunningham of Dawson Springs, KY, and Shannon M. VanderHoff (husband, Mike) of Lafayette, siblings, Bill Chalmers (wife, Ann) of Texas and Janie Cox (husband, Ralph) of Lafayette, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. Chalmers and two sisters, Carlene Miller and Mary Dewey.

Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. with Military Honors, to follow at 7 p.m.
