Joseph Erwin Obituary
Joseph R. "Joe" Erwin, 81, was called home by his Heavenly Father on July 13, 2014 after battling cancer for four years. Joe was born March 8, 1933 in the southwest corner of the living room at Route 10, Rooker Road, West Lafayette. He was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Raderstorf) Erwin. Joe graduated from Klondike High School in 1951. He was honorable discharged from the United States Air Force, serving part of his deployment in Guam and Japan. He married Joy Gould on June 19, 1953 in Indianapolis and she survives. Joe worked as a police officer for the Purdue Police Department and retired as a deputy from the Tippecanoe Sheriff's Department after 23 years of service. Joe drove the first ever marked sheriff's squad car and was the second uniformed sheriff's deputy in Tippecanoe County. He was employed at the Indiana Veteran's Home for twelve years as the head of security and safety, and was the owner and operator or Erwin Construction Company. As a member of Connection Point Church, he loved worshipping his Lord and Savior. Joe loved spending time with his family and the family dog, Joey. He was past president, past charter president, and a life member of Fraternal Order of Police #157, a member of the Merou Grotto, the Forty & Eight Chateau, and the American Legion Post # 492.
Surviving with his wife, Joy, are a daughter, Sue Daniels (husband, Elvis) and a son, Steve Erwin (wife, Teena) both of Lafayette, two brothers, Charles Erwin, Jr. (wife, Judy) and Jim Erwin (wife, Jane) both of Lafayette. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Dr. Clint J. Daniels, DC (wife, Gretchen) of St. Louis, MO, Army Sgt. Stephanie Stankus (husband, Jonathan) of Honolulu, HI, and Stacia Erwin of Lafayette. Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bradford and two brothers, Paul and Bill Erwin.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Services 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 in Hippensteel Chapel with Pastor Ted Brust officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to relayforlife.com c/o Country Cruisers team under Sue Daniels. Joy & family, it was a pleasure to know JPOJ. I loved hearing his jokes and seeing his smile. He was always in good spirits, even when he felt terrible. What a testimony to his faith! Your family is in my prayers. I've thought of you all frequently since leaving LCC and moving to GA, and was sad to see this in the paper. But thankful also to know his healing is complete in Heaven, and I'll see him again someday!
