Martha Stevenson Obituary

Martha A. Stevenson

Martha A. Stevenson, 74, of Clark's Hill, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 surrounded by family after a valiant fight against Alzheimer's, lovingly assisted by her niece and caregiver, Brenda Mack.

She was born September 1, 1943 in Lafayette to the late James and Mary Elizabeth Peake. On February 19, 1960, Martha married David Stevenson, who survives. David and Martha were married 57 years and resided in Tippecanoe County their entire marriage.

Martha enjoyed her years working at Sears and retired with a reputation for having a quick smile and a kind word for co-workers and customers alike. She was a faithful member of Christ Memorial Temple, where she lovingly and patiently taught Sunday School for 48 years to pre-school aged children.

Martha's open door and open heart meant that anyone could stop by for a meal, support, or simply a piece of her famous chocolate sheet cake.

Those who knew her will remember her for her sweet and gentle spirit, her love for family and friends, and her non-judgmental warmth and acceptance.

Martha is survived by her husband David; daughter, Marcella (Randy) Holmes; son, Dave (Darlene) Stevenson; 4 grandchildren, Nathan (Paula) Holmes, Rachel (Lee) Ballard, Brooke Stevenson, Lacie Stevenson (fiance, Peyton Dennard); 7 great-grandchildren, Trinity Whatley-Stevenson, Greysen Dennard, Remington Dennard, Cashen Holmes, Catherine Holmes, Liam O'Neal, and Ben Ballard.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brother, James Milton Peake Jr., and granddaughter, Lyndsey Stevenson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Martha's name may be given to Tupelo Children's Mansion, 1801 E. Main St., Tupelo, MS 38804.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd, Lafayette.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, November 3, 2017 at Christ Memorial Temple, 3801 Union Street, Lafayette, IN 47905. Services will be officiated by Pastor Anthony Carson, Bishop Raymond Parnell and Pastor Jordan Parnell.

Interment will immediately follow at Clarks Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to thank St. Elizabeth Hospice for the wonderful care and love given to Martha and the family.

I am grateful that as a young teen I had the opportunity to teach Sunday School alongside Sister Stevenson for many years. I am also thankful for the many talks & hours spent together at the farmhouse. Though I moved away from Lafayette more than 30 years ago, Martha Stevenson left a positive imprint on my heart. I am looking forward to seeing her again in Heaven.
