Mary Jane Boyle, 97

Mary Jane Boyle, 97, formerly of West Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus, Indiana. Born in Advance, Indiana on May 4, 1914, she was the youngest of 6 children of Arthur H. and Alice F. Yager. She graduated from Advance High School in 1932, and later earned her Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Business Education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.

Her first teaching job was in Remington, Indiana. In 1938 she married Howard J. Boyle in Advance, Indiana, at her family home. She and Howard lived several places until they settled in W. Lafayette where her husband was Chief Accountant at Purdue University. After her husband was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 1952, Mary Jane returned to teaching. She taught at Monitor High School, Klondike High School, and finished her teaching career at Lafayette Jefferson High School, where she earned the Jefferson High School Wall of Fame Award.

Mary Jane belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma and Alpha Delta Kappa, both teacher sororities. She also belonged to Purdue Women's Club, Edgewood Club, Lafayette Teachers Educator's Association, and Indiana Retired Teacher's Association. She enjoyed volunteering at Home Hospital as a Pink Lady and also belonged to the Home Hospital Auxiliary. Mary Jane was a member of Federated Church in W. Lafayette for over 60 years where she was on numerous church committees and held different offices, most recently as the Prayer Chain Chairman, which she had a special calling for.

Mary Jane had a love for serving people, whether it was friends or family. She was always taking food to a shut-in or a new neighbor. When she retired, she said she wanted to do something each day to make a difference in someone else's life. She enjoyed gardening, reading, playing the piano, and playing bridge in her Therapeutic Bridge Club. Her greatest love was her family and she cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Mary Jane is survived by her children, Philip F. (wife, Cathy) of Raleigh, N.C.; Carolyn J. Hart (husband, Joe) of Columbus, IN; and Thomas H. Very saddened to hear of her passing. I had her as a teacher and loved her!!! We also shared the same name and that gave us an additional bond. My sincere condolences go out to her family. What an inspirational woman and such a wonderful role model. I am blessed to have known her! I know that she truly helped to shape me into the person that I am today. God Bless!!!

Mary Jane was one of those great moms who helped make Lawn Avenue such a nurturing environment for those of us fortunate enough to grow up on that street. And what an impressive role model she was to all of us! I'm thankful I was able to attend her party last year at Westminster. She was one of a kind. My thoughts and prayers to Phil, Carolyn and Tom.
