Robert L'Homme Obituary

Robert Arthur L'Homme

Lafayette - The Very Reverend Robert Arthur L'Homme, retired Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in Peoria, IL, entered eternal life on November 25, 2020, after a courageous battle with COVID-19.

He was born May 2, 1941, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Arthur and Georgina Roberta Miner L'Homme, who preceded him in heaven.

Dean L'Homme married the love of his life, Carol McClintock L'Homme, April 15, 1989, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kankakee, Illinois.

Dean L'Homme received a Master's of Science in Psychology from Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts. Following obtaining his degree, he worked as a disc jockey for a rock and roll radio station in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dean L'Homme also worked as a reporter for the Indianapolis News with a weekly syndicated column, "Religious Speaking" which he wrote for many years. Dean L'Homme then attended the Nashotoah House Seminary, graduating in 1969. He was ordained to the Deaconate in June of 1969, and ordained into the Priesthood on December 20, 1969.

In 1972, Dean L'Homme was installed as Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kankakee, Illinois. His first and most important mission at St. Paul's was getting the parish youth involved in the church by creating a youth group which participated in many parish and charitable endeavors. The youth of St. Paul's fondly called themselves "L'Homme's Kids" and referred to him as Padre. Dean L'Homme served as rector at St. Paul's for 20 years.

In 1992, Dean L'Homme was installed as the Dean of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria, Illinois, where he served until his retirement in 2004. During retirement and until his passing, Dean L'Homme served as Sunday Associate at St. John's Episcopal Church in Lafayette, Indiana.

While in Kankakee and Peoria, Dean L'Homme wore many hats. He was a columnist, President of the Kankakee Mental Health Association, President of the Peoria Historic Preservation Council, and member of Lead Consultants (counseling team for parishes).

Dean L'Homme and his wife, Carol, enjoyed traveling to several countries and antiquing. Dean L'Homme was an avid reader, a knowledgeable Civil War enthusiast and collector. He had studied and spoken several languages. Dean L'Homme loved God, family, kindness, and endeavored to make everyone he met feel valued and loved. He was known to all as Father, Dean, Padre, Pastor, Grandpa, Papa, Pepe, and Bob. His happiest times were when he was baptizing new Christians, leading "L'Hommes Kids," and spending time with his family.

Dean L'Homme in survived by his wife of 31 years, three daughters, a son-in-law, and a daughter-in-law, Victoria McClintock Senesac (Paulette Giardina), of Manteno, IL, Theresa McClintock Scott (Kevin), of Kankakee, IL, and Keli McClintock Roach, of Lafayette, IN; five grandchildren, Daniel Scott, Tyler Scott, Joseph Roach, Cody Roach, and Courtney Roach; six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Brandon, and Kassidy Scott, Kayden, Ava, and Cody, Jr, Roach; and, two foster sons, Robert d'Oliviera and William Sole. He is also survived by two sisters, Jeanne L'Homme and Shirley (Marco) Samayoa, of Brownsburg, Indiana.

Cremation rites have been accorded by Soller-Baker Funeral Home in Lafayette. Due to COVID-19, a memorial service and celebration of life will be at a later date.

It was only today, 8/12/21 that I learned of Bob´s death from a friend who´d grown up with Bob in Worcester and who had been trying to contact him to inform of the death of another friend and priest, Fr John Julian. Bob was the seminarian at my home parish, Annunciation of Our Lady in Waukegan, IL (now in Gurnee,IL) when I was in high school. Knowing I was thinking and praying about becoming a priest, he invited me to spend a weekend at Nashotah House. A decade later, we were colleagues in the Diocese of Chicago. The last time I saw him was at the wedding of his childhood friend where I was preacher and co-officiant. My wife and I sat with his wife and him at the reception that followed and it was such a joy to see hi again after all those years. I´m saddened at his passing but I rejoice that I had the gift of his friendship, guidance, and example in my journey towards ordination and priesthood. I will remember him at Mass this Sunday and will forever rejoice in the witness of his life and ministry. Rest In Peace my friend!

He simply was an outstanding man in so many ways! It was my distinct pleasure to have known him and conversed with him so many times at St. Johns. He will be sorely missed by so many, and a great loss for St. Johns and the community. My deepest sympathy goes out to his lovely wife, Carol, and may Robert's soul rest in peace!!

I’ve never forgotten you Padre! You and your wife, Carol (hi neighbor Ma), were such awesome people to have as role models in high school . We really felt cared about and a true sense of belonging in the youth group. I know you’re in heaven with my parents - and that we will meet again in God’s perfect time. Blessings to you and your family.

Rest in Heavenly Peace Father L'Homme. I miss you and your hugs every Sunday after church at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria IL when I was a kid. You also officiated my baptism and confirmation. You were always so nice and funny and I enjoyed your church services. You would be near the front of the procession when I was in children's choir and also when I was in the adult choir. Me and my friend Megan Poston would draw pictures on the programs and you would find them and compliment them. I will always cherish these memories of you and how much of a good sport you were when Father Blossom told that joke about attaching the most beautiful woman on your arm before procession.

What a joy it was all those years ago to have served as Dean L’Homme’s curate at St. Paul’s, Kankakee, Illinois. I remember those days, long ago now, with great thanksgiving. I recall Bob’s quick wit and great sense of humor. But I am also grateful for all that I learned from him during those years when I was newly ordained. How the time has flown!

Space is too short here to recount some of my favorite stories which are treasured memories. Carol, my heart goes out to you. The world is a sadder place without Dean L’Homme in it!

My late husband Bill Giroux and myself were married in St Paul’s in 1973. Our 2 children were both batiste by Fr L’Homme. I used to teach Sunday school for the preschool children for several years. I loved to hear Fathers sermons and to be apart of my Husband’s family’s church until we moved to Florida. God blessing be with all his family at this season of Remembrance and Holidays. For one of the few times in my life, I am completely without words to relate my feelings about Dean Bob (my little pet name while I worked with him). He was a man of his word, always greeted me with a smile and was filled with fun and crazy pranks. He was, for me, a joy to be around while he was storytelling and working on The Epistle the cathedral monthly newsletter - to make sure I hadn’t put in anything too goofy! Loved this man and was devastated when he retired. Now he has gone on to the place he dreamed about and to the God he loved and worshipped. Farewell dear friend and may be write together again in heaven.

I was lucky to have Father L'Homme as a part of my childhood. He officiated over my baptism and my first communion. I have so many fond memories of him and my time at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kankakee, IL. Even after we moved away, I always looked forward to returning to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. One of my favorite memories of Father L'Homme is of him blessing my babydoll when I brought the doll up to communion with me.

I have fond memories of Father L'Homme from when I attended St Paul's in Kankakee, IL. One of my favorites is when he blessed my baby doll when I brought the doll up to communion with me. Father L'Homme was a very special person.

It is with great sadness and...a heartfelt smile, that I write this note. I was one of 'L'Homme's kids' (along with my 4 siblings). Oh, the wonderful memories of the plays we put on, art auctions, pancake suppers, trip to Wyoming, and acolyting. "Padre' instilled in me a Love for God and other people, which I enjoy today.

My deepest condolences to you Carol & Vickie. The greatest memorial to any human being, is the memories they leave to those they precede into the Kingdom of Christ. I am Blessed and Thankful for the memories I have of those days and our St. Paul's Youth Group.

Love, Scot

There are no words for what Bob meant to my husband and me. His friendship to us reflected so much love and caring. My husband carried that love as with him as he left this world and it remains here with me as I remember so many good times spent with Bob and Carol. We were truly blessed to know him and I am convinced that Bob is sitting at God's side and is being welcomed by those loving arms and is being told "Well done, good and faithful servant." God bless you, Bob. We love you.
