Shirley Condon Obituary

Shirley Sue Condon

Shirley Sue Condon passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 surrounded by her family. On that day, she won her independence and memories back from the cruel tyrant call Alzheimer's.

Born in Terre Haute on June 20, 1935, she was the only child of John and Helen Latham. She was a proud "Purple Eagle" of Garfield High School.

In 1953, while a student at Purdue she married Billy Blaine McDaniel. He died in 1961, leaving her a young widow with two small daughters and expecting a third. In 1965, she married James Joseph McCann, Jr. and they had a daughter together. He died tragically in 1971. She later met William F. Condon and they were the first couple to be married by Mayor Jim Riehle. They wed in 1975 and were together for 27 years until Bill's passing in 2002.

Shirley was a proud Democrat and was active in local politics for many years. She was "Bayh-Belle" for Birch Bayh along with being a precinct committee person and delegate to the Indiana Democrat Convention. Through her years in politics she held the office of Secretary of the Tippecanoe Democratic Central Committee and the Treasurer of the Tippecanoe Democratic Women. She spent many hours manning the phones and putting out mailings at the Democrat headquarters in downtown Lafayette.

Along with her parents and husbands, she is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Billie Sue and grandson, Ryan Condon. She leaves behind 4 daughters, Shirlaine McDaniel, Heather McDaniel (husband: Tommy Roe), Shawna Pearl (husband: John), and Billie Lou Bankoff (husband: Dave); 2 sons, Derry Condon (wife: Trish) and Denny Condon (wife: Brenda); grandchildren, Sean Pickering, Colene King (husband: Ryan), Nate and Matthew Pientok, Evan, Maggie, and Cecelia Pearl, Jon Bankoff, Becky Asleson, Courtney Condon, Katie Alkire, Justin Condon, and Jason Condon; and 14 great grandchildren.

In memory of Shirley the family asks that you wear purple and in lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel. Services will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel with Celebrant Patricia Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.

Shirley was a great American and great Democrat. Her pride in public service was inspiration to those of us coming up the ranks behind her. Her laughter and joy of life was truly contagious. My deepest sympathy, Shawna, John and Heather.
