He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn S. Etheridge; his daughter, Kimberly Fleatherstone and husband Kevin of Jacksonville; two sons, Joseph Randy Etheridge and fiancée Tanya Dragunus of Santa Monica, Calif., and Jeffrey Keith Etheridge of Jacksonville; four granddaughters, Nicole, Lindsay, Madison, and Taylor; and mother-in-law, Oleta Stilley of New Bern.
Joe started his career with Carolina Telephone in 1956, and retired from sprint in 1997, after 41 years of service. While employed he received many awards for safety and quality. He organized and taught the first Cable Splicers Training Class. He began his career with a roving crew in New Bern and was later stationed in Kinston and Jacksonville.
Joe was a devoted Christian and enjoyed sharing his testimony by teaching Sunday School for over 40 years. He spoke in numerous area churches as a Certified Lay Speaker and was also a member of the Gideon's.
Joe was an avid golfer and fisherman and truly enjoyed traveling extensively with his family.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at at Brookwood Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at Brookwood Baptist Church.

Carolyn - I cannot even begin to tell you how sorry i am to learn this morning (June 4th) that Joe had passed away. David and I were out of town for the weekend. He is finally at peace and no longer hurts and he is with his precious Jesus. May God comfort and bless you and your family Carolyn. You and Joe were such an inspiration to David and I and I know countless others. He will be greatly missed.
