Irma Louise Johnson Lonon, age 94 of West Jefferson, died Monday, November 13, 2017 at Ashe Assisted Living. Mrs. Lonon was born in Avery County, NC on Friday, September 21, 1923 to Clayton Colbert and Mary Woodie Johnson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Graydon Lonon, Jr., her brother, all her sisters, her son, Robert "Bob" Clayton Lonon, her grandson, Robert Clayton Lonon, Jr. and her granddaughter, Amy Carson Mathews. Irma taught 4th grade for 34 years and was President Elect of the Charlotte Teachers Association in 1967. She was a member of Park Road Baptist Church in Charlotte and then later attended Bethany United Methodist Church. Quilting, reading, gardening, cooking for family and friends, swimming at Lake Norman, peaceful walks, and spending time with her beloved pets were her lifelong joys.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1pm at Bethany United Methodist Church by Rev. Owen Peeler. The family will receive friends from 12pm to 1pm prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date at Park Road Baptist Church Columbarium in Charlotte.
Mrs. Lonon is survived by: one son, Oscar Graydon "Grady" Lonon, III and wife Jane of West Jefferson, and daughter, Julia Lonon Mathews and husband Jim of Jefferson; four grandchildren, James Lonon, Matthew Lonon, April Lonon Spurlin and husband Keith, Joseph Lonon and wife Cynthia; three great-grandchildren, Clay, Olivia and Grace Spurlin, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family respectfully requests no flowers please. Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 495 Hwy 194 South, West Jefferson, NC 28694, Park Road Baptist Church, 3900 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
