Elaine Swisher

HUMBOLDT - Elaine LaVoice Cordell Swisher, 70, of rural Humboldt, passed away at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011, at Mattoon Health Care Center. Graveside services honoring her life will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the Humboldt Township Cemetery with the Reverend Dr. Mark Prevo officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to services from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon, is assisting her family with the arrangements. LaVoice was born September 25, 1940, in Gamaliel, Kentucky, the daughter of Darold and Beatrice (Turner) Key. She married Wayne Swisher on June 12, 1970. She is survived by her daughters, Sherrie McCullough of Mattoon and Tina Luce and husband Brian of Humboldt; her son, Stan Swisher and girlfriend Dana Jordan of Humboldt; her stepson, Kenny Swisher and wife Jody of Goreville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her stepbrothers Ted and wife Trudy Cox of Danville, Ken Cox of California and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Darold Key; her mother and stepfather, Beatrice and Lawrence Cox; one stepbrother Larry Cox; and her first husband, Norman Cordell. Mrs. Swisher was a graduate of Arcola High School. She was co-owner and operator of the Castle Inn in Mattoon. LaVoice was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Club Auxiliary, and former member and officer of Rainbow Riding Club and Coles County Mounted Patrol. Memorial gifts in her honor are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
