I became acquainted with Lee Roy when we I was in the 3rd grade. We were neighbors and we formed a friendship. When I would return to Mattoon and run into Lee Roy, we always had kind words for each other. I also knew his brothers, Benny and Harold. I am Caucasian and race never entered into our relationship .
75 years have passed and I still recall what a fine person he was. I´ve been away from Mattoon since 1960 but I still remember him as a fine young man. Anyone who knew him I´m sure feels the same.
