Tommy Olterman Obituary
September 21, 2025
KINGSPORT - Tommy "T.O." Olterman, 74, of Kingsport, TN died on September 21, 2025, after a brief illness.
Tommy attended Kingsport City Schools throughout his childhood and graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in 1970. After high school, he attended East Tennessee University and graduated from the University of Oklahoma's School of Economic Development Program.
Throughout his years of service, Tommy was a field representative for Congressman Quillen for many years. He worked for the State of Tennessee Economic and Community Development and finished his career with Tennessee Valley Authority Economic and Community Development. Tommy served many years on the Sullivan County Commission as well as the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman to support the people of this region.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and James Olterman; in-laws, D.B. and Irene Carter; and his beloved daughter, D'Anna Olterman Clendenin.
He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Dee C. Olterman; son, Derek B. Olterman and fiancée, Christol L. Hickman; grandchildren, Bentley and Carly Olterman, and Carter and Jackson Clendenin; sisters, Kathy Forester and husband, Bill, Suzanne Dugger and husband, Brent, and Lisa Olterman; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Christ Fellowship Church, 260 Victory Lane, Kingsport, TN 37664. Dr. Marvin Cameron and Tyler McMullins will officiate. Derek Olterman and Kathy Foerster will deliver eulogies.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 pm in the sanctuary following the service.

Like so many other things you don't think about before it's too late, I've come to realize that Tommy was my first best friend in life. He lived a block away and we did everything together when we were kids. My mom considered a third son. Two things about Tommy that were absolutely natural: his gifts as an athlete and a people-person. The first made him a star in youth and the second did the same in his life as an adult. You could not know Tommy and not like him. Time and distance separated us in our later lives, but he will live in my fondest memories forever. Dee was and is an angel and Jan's and my prayers go out to her and their family.
