Alice (Lee) Cairns Sprowles, 92, of Stafford Springs, favorite wife of 31 years to Jol C. Sprowles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. She was born on April 20, 1933, in Newton, MA, daughter to Elizabeth (Lane) and Richard Lee.
Alice began her family with her first husband, Richard Cairns. They were married for 20 years and had four children. She enjoyed staying active in her community throughout her life. She was involved with Girl Scouts of America for 85 years and spent some time as Administrator. She also enjoyed being a summer camp counselor and director. Alice had a very theatrical mind and personality. She spent many years in amateur dramatics, doing costume design and playing leading roles in several shows. Her creativity continued as she grew older, tailoring and sewing garments for family and friends. She also found great interest in quilt making and gardening. Faith was very important to her. She was a longtime member of Ellington Congregational Church and was very active in their choir and committees.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, David Cairns and his wife Catherine, and Richard Cairns; her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her three stepchildren, Amy Sprowles, Chris Sprowles and his partner Jessica Thomas, and Karen Rice and her husband David; her sister, Elizabeth Kilb; and her two nieces. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn; and her infant son, Douglas.
Funeral services for Alice will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main St., Ellington. The service will be available online at eccucc.org. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 9-9:45 a.m. with her Celebration of Life service to begin at 10 a.m. all at the church.
