Charlotte Ford Obituary

Charlotte (Schlichting) Ford, 71, loving mother and wife of the late Robert Ford, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at her home in Tolland surrounded by her family.

Charlotte was born July 18, 1940, and spent the first 65 years of her life in East Windsor. She graduated from the University of Hartford with a bachelor's degree in fine arts and master's degree in early childhood education. Charlotte began her career as a teacher in South Windsor in the early 1960s. It was as a teacher at Avery Street School in South Windsor, where she met her husband Robert Ford. They were married for 26 years until Bob's passing in 1991. Charlotte spent the majority of her working years as a pre-kindergarten teacher at Warehouse Point and Broad Brook Elementary schools. After her retirement from teaching in 2000, Charlotte served as children's librarian at the Warehouse Point Library until 2010. Charlotte had a genuine love for children as evidenced by her long career as a teacher. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren immensely. Charlotte made many close friends both in the schools and at the library. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, attending the theater, making cards, and shopping.

Charlotte is survived by her two sons, Justin Ford, and his wife, Ellen, with their daughters, Emelia and Selah of Ashford, and Joshua Ford, and his wife, Cindy, with their son, Collin, of Ashford; her sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Harvey Della Bernarda of Cumming, Ga.; her brother-in-law, John Ford, and his wife, Jane, of Worcester, Mass.; her sister-in-law, Rosemary Ford of Cape Neddick, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. Charlotte was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Anne Ford.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. John Episcopal Church, 92 Main St., East Windsor. Burial will follow in Scantic Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St., East Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Warehouse Point Library, 107 Main St., East Windsor, CT 06088.

Josh and Justin: I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with your mom for many years going way back to Mulnite Farms and then years later as a teacher. What I remember in addition to all the things others have said about her, was her artistic abilities. I still have a piece she did for me in calligraphy of the Song of Ruth which was part of my wedding ceremony. It is amazing in its detail and beauty. I have treasured it all these years. The lyrics refer to how people become the fabric of our lives . Know that your mom added a beautiful thread to the fabic of so many lives and will never be forgotten by those she touched.
