Daniel Rezende Obituary

Daniel W. Rezende, 86, of South Windsor, beloved husband of the late Rose Marie (Dirrigl) Rezende died peacefully on Monday, March 27, 2023, at home, surrounded by his family.

Daniel was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Feb. 12, 1937, son of the late Manuel and Mary (Carreiro) Rezende. He grew up in Plymouth and moved to Hartford, with his family as a teenager. He graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1955 and attended Hillyer College. Daniel went to work at Manny's Shell Service Station in Hartford with his father and would eventually take over the family business. He would later open a second station in Newington and worked for over 35 years, before selling the business in 1990. Daniel had a passion for coaching baseball and helping children. He coached baseball starting with Little League with his children, the Insurance Twilight League for 15 years, Ellington Legion Baseball for five years, South Windsor Legion Baseball for 25 years, and a South Windsor High School Volunteer Assistant Coach for 13 years, totaling over 45 years coaching the game he loved. He was respectfully called Chief by his players and loved sharing his knowledge and love of the game with young people. He was an advocate for people with special needs and coached the Special Olympics for 30 years, both bowling and track and field. He also helped with the CT State Games. Daniel started the Monday Night Social Club at the South Windsor Community Center and was a part of the Boundless Playground Committee in South Windsor, and a member of the Parks & Rec Commission for almost 20 years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and UConn Huskies. A kind, caring and endlessly devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many he will be dearly missed.

He leaves his children, Daniel W. Rezende Jr., and his wife, Wendy of West Hartford, David Rezende of South Windsor, Denise Armes and her husband, Ronald of South Windsor, and Douglas Rezende of Stafford Springs; his grandchildren, Michelle, Kenny, Erica, Robert, Matthew, Elena, and Isabella; his great-grandchildren, Brayden, Henry, and Claire; his sister, Kathleen Barile and her husband, Carmen of Enfield; his brother, Manuel Rezende and his wife, Rose of California; and many nieces and nephews, including Claudia Nunes of East Hartford, who was dear to him. He was predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Anderson.

His family will receive friends on Sunday, April 2, 2023, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 3, 2023, 10 a.m., meeting directly at St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Rd., South Windsor. Burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Monday Night Social Club, 91 Ayers Road, South Windsor, CT 06074.

My prayers are with the Rezende family. I was so fortunate to visit with Danny and all my first cousins last summer at cousin Jody Carreiro´s home as I haven´t seen my cousins since they were teenagers in East Hartford CT. Danny´s mother Mary was my father´s sister.God bless your family.

Denise and Ron, I am sorry for your loss. I will always remember Dan and his endless hours working in and around the press box. He was such a good guy and always had a kind word for us.

Like so many, I was fortunate enough to cross paths with Dan and spend several amazing years on the ball field with him. He was a very special man and I am extremely grateful that. Dan always had a smile on his face and was such a great pleasure to be around. All my best to the entire Rezende family.

Two of my brothers played Legion baseball and so I was fortunate to spend quite a few years at the baseball field with Chief. My parents typically delegated their "shack duty" to me and so I have many fond memories of being behind home plate with Chief helping me on the grill. One of the kindest men I have been fortunate to know, he will be deeply missed.

Chief was one of the most selfless and community minded people I have ever met; he set a great example for countless South Windsor kids with his humble service to others. He was also the best BP pitcher around.
