Dorothy Cumming Obituary

Dorothy Ann Cumming, 82, of Lexington, formerly of North Platte, died Feb. 1, 2010, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

Dorothy was born March 26, 1927, to Niels and Anna Nielsen at Kearney, where she graduated from high school with the Class of 1945. On April 15, 1950, Dorothy married Harold G. Cumming at Columbus. They lived in Omaha, before moving to North Platte in 1953.

Following Harold's death in March of 2005, Dorothy moved to Lexington. She enjoyed her family, puzzles and stuffed animals. Dorothy was baptized in the First United Methodist Church in Kearney and was a member of the Eagles No. 2839 Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Post No. 1504 Auxiliary.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Diana (Lyle) Hasselbring, of Lexington, Vickie Moran and special friend, Carl Cassmeyer of Freeburg, Mo.; a son, William "Bill" (Cathy) Cumming, of Hershey; seven grandchildren, Travis and Cathy Maxwell, Dustin and Cari Cumming, Shane Cumming, Tessa Cumming, Michael and Danielle Cumming, Tammy and Shawn Williams and Justin Cumming; six great-grandchildren; and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, Sr.; a son, Harold, Jr.; her parents; two sisters, Amy Thompson and Norma Vance; and a brother, Donald Nielsen.

A memorial graveside service and burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Pastor Glenn Johnson of the Lexington Berean Church officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Plum Creek Care Center. Those wishing to sign the memorial book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. Diane and family, I was saddened to read about Dorothy's passing. I remember all the fun times we had from our char bar days. Also, I'm sorry to read you also lost your father. They were great people and I'll have fond memories of them always.
