Friedl Weigel Obituary

Friedl Weigel
Our mother, Friedl Weigel, was born on November 24, 1926, into a large family in the small Bavarian town of Kirchenlamitz, Germany.
All her life she described fondly the Christmases there - cold black nights lit with white candles, filled with the smell of pine trees and the sound of church bells and friends all around singing "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht". …
At the end of WW2, ever-the-survivor, she and a friend signed on for a sponsorship and came to the States.
With practical knowledge of nursing and the ability to converse in Yiddish, which is closely akin to German, mom was perfectly suited to her new job- taking care of an elderly Jewish woman, Mrs. Siegel, who happened to be mother-in-law of Connecticut's first Jewish Governor, Abraham Ribicoff,
Our mom and father were married in the stately Governor's mansion on Prospect Street, in Hartford, on April 5, 1956, The Governor himself walked her down the aisle. …
Freidl was a homemaker after getting married and raised two children, Jo-anna and Bryan.
Our mother passed without pain on December 9, 2025, at 99-years-of-age.
Freidl left a note by her bed, scribbled in pencil in "Old German" on a raggedy piece of scrap paper, she said:
"Weinet nicht an meinem Grabe, gönnet mir die ewige Ruh, denke was ich gelitten habe, eh ich schloss die Augen zu."
-- "Don't cry at my grave, gift to me eternal rest, think about what I suffered before I closed my eyes."
