James Farrell Obituary

James "Jim" Farrell, age 68, of Vernon, passed away April 6, 2018, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was a devoted man of faith and head over heels in love with his wife of 41 years, Margaret. He touched so many lives through his selfless example. Born and raised on Long Island, Jim attended Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and later earned his Master's degree in education at Adelphi University. Jim became a teacher at St. Thomas the Apostle School, in West Hempstead, New York, where he later met his wife. They married in 1976, and started a wonderful life together. Jim eventually took a job with Aetna (now Travelers), transferred his growing family to Connecticut, and remained there, beloved by his co-workers, for the rest of his career.

Everyone who knew Jim loved him. His family meant everything to him, his love and support for his children was unwavering, and as a Pop Pop, he could always be found playing and being silly with his grandkids. He spent countless hours volunteering and participating at St. Bernard's Parish. He was a lector, youth group leader, school board member, altar server, and SCC member, to name some. He also loved sports and coached both soccer and little league baseball in Rockville for many years. Jim loved to play, watch, and talk about golf and was known for remembering every single course he ever played. Throughout his life, he never gave up on the New York Mets and Jets, found a kinship with the music of Billy Joel, and his sarcastic wit would bring a smile to anyone's face.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Meg and her husband, Kevin; his son, Mark and his wife, Sarah; his grandchildren, Jacob, Fisher, and Charlie; his brothers and sisters; his nieces and nephews; his grand-nieces and nephews; and hundreds of other people whose lives he touched immeasurably. His legacy will live on forever.

His family will receive friends today, Monday, April 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, Vernon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard Church in Rockville Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to go directly to the church. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the Cornerstone Foundation in Rockville.

I came to know Jim as an agent for Travelers working with him for a number of years. He was great to work with! . I always remember being his guest at the Travelers Championship. Always a heart felt kind word with a great big smile. I just learned of his passing. Jim, You will be missed. I hope all the tears will turn to smiles when you think of him.

While working with Margaret I had the opportunity to see Jim and Margaret at various school functions and as he constantly would help her in setting up her room at the beginning of each school year. They always enjoyed being together no matter what they were doing, which is a true gift in a relationship. I remember shopping at Christopher & Banks one day and in comes Jim shopping for Margaret. He didn't know I was in the store but it was wonderful watching him with the clerk finding just the "perfect" outfit for a gift for Margaret. You had a very "special" bond and you were truly blessed to have found such a great partner. May your memories make this very sad time a little easier. Peace Margaret.

To Margaret and Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Farrell family during this difficult time. Jim was a dear friend and co-worker for many years. As a young professional just beginning a career at the Aetna, Jim became a trusted friend and guiding mentor for me for over thirty years. During that time, I will forever remember Jim's love for his family, sympathetic ear, positive thoughts, and enduring personality. My fondest memories of Jim will be of our countless rounds of golf which were more of a celebration of our love for the game and an opportunity for him to share stories of his family, in particular of Mark's latest quest for par, than our own attempt at mastering the game. Jim's faith and quick wit will be a lasting memory of a friend taken from us too soon. God bless you Jim, rest in peace.

Margaret and Family,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Although I only knew Jim from our moving/construction at St Bridget School, he was the most helpful, considerate and warming person I knew.

Margaret and Family,
We were so sad to hear this morning of Jim's passing. It seems like a short time ago that Jim was beaming about his milestone pin and sharing his positive thoughts about going through difficult times and coming out victorious on the other side. Well, he has done that!! Victorious in the Lord! We will miss him. God Bless!! xoxoxo
