Jason Bates Obituary

Officer Jason E. Bates, 31, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010. He courageously battled cancer since May 2009.

Jason was raised in Bolton, and was a graduate of Bolton High School, Class of 1997. After graduating high school he attended Florida Southern College on a baseball scholarship. He received his bachelor of science in marketing and finance from Eastern Connecticut State University. Jason was an avid sports fan and played baseball throughout his life. He played for Bolton High School, Manchester Legion, South Windsor, and East Hartford. He also played on softball leagues in Bolton, Tolland, and Hartford. Jason was a diehard New York Mets and New York Giants fan. He also had a passion for poker, camping, and music, especially Pearl Jam and Country. Jason graduated from the Hartford Police Academy in October 2007. He loved his job and each and every fellow officer that he served with. He truly enjoyed police work and the camaraderie of the Hartford Police Department.

Jason appreciated the love and support he received from the Hartford Police Department throughout his battle with cancer. His commitment to protect and serve carried into his family and friends.

He is survived by, sadly missed, and will forever be in the hearts of mother, Donna Bradford; stepfather, Lane Bradford; brother, Ed Bates; sister-in-law, Debbie Bates; brother, Lane Bradford; father, Edward Bates; and half brother, James Bates. He is also survived by: grandparents, Rudy and Trudy Schuster "Grammy and Opa," Mildred Shinault "Nana," and Edward Bates. He also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The family extends its sincere gratitude to the staff at Hartford Hospital oncology, Dana Farber, Brigham and Women's transplant and MICU teams, and the Hartford Police Department.

Friends may call at the Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Ave., Hartford, on Monday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Funeral procession from the Ahern Funeral Home will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Bolton Center Cemetery, 32 Hebron Road, Bolton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Officer Bates' name may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 (LLS.com), or Hartford Police Benevolent Association, c/o the Hartford Police Department, 50 Jennings Road, Hartford, CT 06120.

I didn't know Jason, but reading this has broken my heart this morning. He sounds like such a wonderful guy with his whole life ahead of him. I'm so, so sorry for your loss.
