Jeanne Marie "Joan" Wood

1929 - 2023

Jeanne Marie "Joan" Wood passed away May 4, 2023, at Reed's Landing in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was 93 years old.

Born Aug. 9, 1929, in Springfield, she was the daughter of Homer and Isabelle Robida. She attended schools in Springfield and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947, after which she attended secretarial school for a year. She married Malcolm "Mike" Wood, whom she met ice-skating in Forest Park, in 1951. They lived in New Jersey while he completed his service in the Navy, and then moved to Worcester while he attended Holy Cross College. The couple settled in Enfield where they raised their six children and built a community with many friends and neighbors. Over the years Joan worked at several jobs, including selling Avon products, working as a Weight Watchers leader and later teaching safe driving classes for the AARP. For many years the family vacationed on Cape Cod and later bought a home in Eastham. Joan and Mike loved to travel, and after his death in 1987, she continued to travel with friends. Joan loved raising a family, which she said was her calling. She was active in Holy Family Parish and volunteered for Loaves and Fishes, making sandwiches for after-school programs. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, taking day trips and going to the theater, and she doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by six children, Pamela Schneider (John), Michael Wood (Lynn), Stephen Wood (Sally), Tim Wood (Jenny), Peter Wood (Kitt) and Andrew Wood (Lisa); five grandchildren, Jeffrey Schneider (Lauren), Jeanine (David) Lavigne, Michael Wood (Andrea), Rowan Wood and Lir Wood; and five great-grandchildren, Reese and Rylee Lavigne, Harper and Leo Schneider, Juliana Smith, Mackenzie Wood, and Mason Wood; and step-great-grandson Connor Smith. She was predeceased by grandson Christopher Wood.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 5, from 9 to 10 a.m., at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield, followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Family Church at 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Hazardville Cemetery.
