Kalevi Kotilainen passed away peacefully with family members in attendance at Manchester Hospital on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, at the age of 95.

Kalevi, known as Kal to friends and colleagues, is lovingly remembered by his wife (of nearly 65 years) Grace; his children, Grace Ann, Tim and Carol; his son-in-law Rich; and his grandchildren, Jessica, Kimberly, Sara, Timothy, Alemnesh and Dinaoly.

He arrived in the U.S. by ship in 1939, leaving Finland to escape the winter war. He traveled across the North Sea and North Atlantic as an unescorted 13-year-old to join his parents in New York. After technical school, Kal served in the Navy in aviation ordnance in the mid-1940s and again in the early 1950s. He worked as an engineer for Hamilton Standard, while finishing his degree in Education from UConn. He became an Industrial Arts Teacher and ended his career as the Manager of the engine repair shop at Agway. He enjoyed creative woodworking, skiing, repairing almost anything, watching UConn basketball, traveling, and spending time with his family.

A calling hour will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 10 to 11 a.m., with a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main St. Danielson. Burial with full military honors will follow in South Cemetery, Brooklyn.
