Michael Alexopoulos Obituary

Michael "Meho" Alexopoulos passed away peacefully, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, surrounded at his bedside by members of his loving family.

Born on Aug. 26, 1928, and a lifelong resident of Suffield, Michael was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Patricia E. (Seaver) Alexopoulos. He is survived by his son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Caroline (Suffield); grandson Brandon and his wife, Meghan (Suffield); granddaughter, Cara (Wethersfield); and great-grandchildren, Logan, Veda, Lucas, and Leon (Suffield). He remained lovingly devoted to his sister, Lily Kane and brother-in-law, Ronald (East Longmeadow, Massachusetts); cousins, Harry Danos (Niantic) and Lenny Danos (Springfield); and his many nieces and nephews and their family members who he loved and adored, and was always ready to share a good joke and much laughter. Michael was the proud grandson of Reverend Christopher Danos, the first permanent priest in the then newly established St. Nicholas, Greek Orthodox Church in Enfield. One of nine children born to his Greek immigrant parents Gus and Irene (Danos) Alexopoulos, Michael was predeceased by all of his siblings except the previously mentioned loving sister Lily, with whom he shared daily phone contact, both of them making sure to end every call by telling the other "Love you for ever and ever.'

Following in his father's footsteps as the proud owner and operator of the local wholesale florist supplier, Suffield Evergreen Company, Michael made daily deliveries to customers from southern Connecticut to Worchester, Massachusetts, for more than 50 years until his retirement at the age of 79. Famous for top quality products and dependable service with a smile, Michael was widely sought after for custom handcrafted Christmas wreathes, including a 15-foot diameter wreath made for the inaugural Christmas season at the Ledyard Pequot Casino. A diehard New York Yankee fan, Michael was always quick to let you know of his longtime admiration for the boys in pinstripes, dating from the days of Joe DiMaggio, to Derek Jeter, to the present day team with his favorite new superstar, Aaron Judge. This love of baseball led to many years of coaching the Suffield Farm Team, Little League, and later after being part of establishing the program, the Suffield Senior League. Having coached several winning teams in local men's softball leagues and tournaments, Michael settled into his new title as "Uncle Mike" to a vast number of ballplayers, who always enjoyed his contagious enthusiasm for the game and postgame social activities as well.

Through the years, Michael's commitment to civic organizations and groups also included being a member of the Suffield Lions Club, serving as an officer and coach with the Greys Athletic Association (Enfield), member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, Suffield, and a daily regular at the Country Diner (Enfield) breakfast gang.

Michael's family will receive friends and relatives Monday, Feb. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. N. (Rt. 159), Suffield.

A brief memorial service has been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home with the burial to immediately follow in the Thompsonville Cemetery, Enfield.

Donations are encouraged to be made to the Enfield Food Shelf, 96 Alden Ave., Enfield, CT 06082.

I'm so sad to hear this news. Mike senior was a great guy and coach when I played Little League. I saw him and my childhood buddy Michael junior a few years ago at the Tavino house while visiting from where I now live in California. I am giving Michael junior an air hug right now. I'll give the hug in person when I visit again in September. Rest peacefully big Mike.
