Richard E. "Dick" Smyth

Richard Smyth Obituary

Richard "Dick" E. Smyth, 56, of East Windsor, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, in East Windsor.

Dick was born Dec. 17, 1958, in Springfield, son of Rhoda (Gilpin) Smyth of Enfield and the late F. Edwin Smyth. He was a resident of Enfield most of his life moving to East Windsor in 2000. Dick owned and operated the Smyth Bus Company that he started in 1975 with his late father, F. Edwin Smyth, serving the towns of Enfield, East Windsor, and Windsor Locks with the transportation needs of their school systems. He also operated F. E. Smyth & Son Inc. that his late father started in the 1960s. Dick was a very generous person who gave his time and support to many charitable organizations in the North Central Connecticut region. He was very proud of his school bus transportation company and was instrumental in starting several safety programs which have been adopted on a national level. Dick was a member of the Enfield Congregational Church and former member of the Enfield Volunteer Fire Dept. District 1 from Dec. 1975 to June 1985. He was a hardworking hands-on owner and mechanic at his bus company where every bus was treated as if his own children where riding on them. Dick raised Belted Galloway's cattle and farm animals on his farm in East Windsor and loved his pets. For many years Dick supported the Four Town Fair, especially the horse show.

Besides his mother, Rhoda, he is survived by his brother, Robert "Bob" Smyth and his wife, Linda, of Somers; many nieces and nephews; his extended family at the garage; and his former wife, Jennifer.

A private family funeral and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Enfield Congregational Church, 1295 Enfield St., Enfield.

Dick's personal wishes were to have donations in his memory be made to the Enfield Congregational Church, P.O. Box 3171, Enfield, CT 06083-3171, or to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1365 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082.
