Shirley Bryant Obituary

Shirley (Hoxie) Bryant, 87, of Vernon, beloved wife of the late Richard A. Bryant, died unexpectedly in her home on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021.

Shirley was born in East Hartford, on April 29, 1934, to the late Chesterfield and Bertha (Phippeney) Hoxie. She grew up in East Hartford and Winsted, and was a graduate of The Gilbert School in Winsted. She married the love of her life, Richard A. Bryant on June 28, 1959, and they settled in Vernon in 1966. Shirley worked in various positions at several educational institutions throughout the years, including for the Vernon Board of Education, from which she retired in 1997. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Vernon. Shirley loved reading, singing, Bible Study, and her family. A kind, caring, loving, and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many, she will be cherished forever.

She leaves her daughters, Karen B. Rowell and her husband, H. William Rowell of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Cynthia L. Bryant and her husband, Martin Bihl of Robbinsville, New Jersey, Nancy A. Bryant and her fiancé, Joseph Groves of Vernon, and Pamela L. Bryant of Vernon; her sister, Florence Nagy and her husband, Alex of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and her grandchildren, Emily B. Bihl of St. Louis, Missouri, Alison D. Ingram of Ashuelot, New Hampshire, and Holden B. Bihl and his fiancée, Kathryn J. Houghton of St. Louis. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Hoxie; and her granddaughter, Clarissa Grace Ingram.

Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Ladd Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. A funeral service will follow at 5 p.m., at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at Hillside Cemetery in East Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity or First Congregational Church of Vernon.

I will miss Shirley. She was a great supporter of my venture with the Strong Family Farm from the beginning. And a nice, caring neighbor! My heart goes out to all the family.
