Stephen Ardel Obituary
He was born in Putnam on Dec. 7, 1925, the son of the late John and Mary (Kitchuia) Ardel. Stephen was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Coventry for more than 40 years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended Willimantic State Teachers College (now known as Eastern Connecticut State University), and the University of Connecticut, where he earned his degrees. Stephen shared his passion for education with the children of Mansfield as a teacher and principal for 33 years, retiring from Southeast Elementary School in 1984. He loved to cook and he made a "mean apple pie!" He also enjoyed the beaches of Maine, woodworking, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and watching all kinds of cooking shows and was an excellent dancer.
Besides his parents and his wife, Stephen was also predeceased by his eldest son, Gary J. Ardel, and several brothers and sisters. Stephen is survived by his sons Craig S. Ardel and his wife, Lourdes, of Coventry, Scott E. Ardel and his wife, Maria, of West Hartford; his daughter-in-law Sharon A. Barnes of Frederick, Md.; grandchildren Caitlin, Samantha, Amanda, Benjamin, Stacy, Brian, Christopher, and Emily; and many nieces and nephews. Stephen was a kind and humble man and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff from Woodlake at Tolland for all of the wonderful care, support, and friendship given to Dad while he was in their care.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family at Coventry-Pietras Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Turnpike (Route 44), Coventry for calling hours on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday Nov. 8, 2013, at St. Mary Church, 1600 Main S., Coventry, with burial to take place at Center Cemetery, Coventry.

To the Ardel family: Mr. Ardel was principal at Southeast Elementary School when I was a student. I have fond memories of him and his kindness for all of the students. He helped to make Southeast a warm and loving place to learn and grow. My thoughts are with you and your family.

To the Ardel Family, My thoughts are with you all at this time. Your Dad was a dedicated educator who I had the homor of knowing and working with while our children attended Southeast. He encouraged parents to participate in the school community and was always willing to help set-up the tables for the ski & skate sale, the craft Celebration, whatever. If I recall correctly I think we accidently sold his ski jacket at one of those sales by mistake! As time goes by, always remember the good times. My best to you all, Carol Pellegrine
