Steven Freddo Obituary

Steven C. Freddo, 64, of Andover, beloved husband of Sharon Freddo, died peacefully on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Steve was born on Sept. 13, 1952, in Manchester, the son of Eleanor (Morrison) Freddo and the late Joseph A. Freddo. He was a graduate of Bolton High School in 1970 and went on to graduate from Middlesex Community College. Steve worked as an EMT for Manchester Ambulance which sparked a career in emergency services. Steve went on to work as a constable with the CT State Police, Troop K in Colchester and later served as a police officer in East Windsor and South Windsor. As an officer in South Windsor, Steve was the first coordinator of the Field Training Officer Program. He worked as an officer for several years before being promoted to Agent and assigned to the Investigations Unit with the South Windsor Police Department. Steve went on to work as an Inspector at the Hartford Chief States Attorney Office. He was awarded with the Hartford Police Department Unit Citation, as a result of initiating the "Shooting Team" to combat violent crimes in Hartford. He ultimately retired in December of 2014. He was also a part of the CT Fugitive Task Force, he taught the hunters safety course, and was a CT State Police Firearms Instructor. Steve enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, boating, and fishing with friends and family. He was a member of the Colchester Fish & Game Club, a member of the Hartford Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 19, and the Port Charlotte Moose Lodge No. 2121. He also enjoyed music, playing the drums throughout his life. In the past, he found great enjoyment playing with the CT State Police Pipes and Drums Band. Steve was a loyal and proud family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a second father to many. His legacy will live on as his family continues to keep up the tradition of family and food. In his retirement, he found solace in his Florida home, boating, fishing, and relaxing by the pool. A kind, caring, loving, and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend he will be greatly missed.

His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital for their kind and compassionate care, especially Jamie and Morgan.

Along with his wife, Sharon, of 43 years, and his mother, Eleanor Freddo of Bolton, he leaves his daughters, Heather Modzelewski and her husband, Thomas, of Somers and SGT Christy Martinez and her husband, SFC Ricky Martinez, of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; his brother, Thomas Freddo and his wife, Janice, of Westport, Massachusetts; his beloved grandchildren whom he adored, Keegan, Izabella, and Peyten; his sister-in-law, Linda Lagace and her husband, Philip, of Concord, Massachusetts; nieces and nephews, Catherine Freddo and her fiancé, Joseph Skowronek, of Baltimore, Maryland, Courtney Lagace of New York, New York and Adam Lagace of South Hadley, Massachusetts; and his close friend, Howard Slater and his companion, Mary Lou "Doc" Kenyon, of South Windsor. Along with his father, Joseph Freddo he was also predeceased by his nephew, Matthew Freddo.

His family will receive friends on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. A Celebration of Life Service will follow on Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A picnic to commemorate Steve's life will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at the Colchester Fish and Game Club, 16 Old Town Road, Colchester at noon. The family asks for all to come so we can share the memories we all built with Steve. Burial will be private at the request of his family.

Our sincerest condolences to Sharon, Heather and Christy and the Freddo's - Ellie, Tom and Jan, we are so sorry for your loss. Steve had a huge HEART, personality and presence and he will be missed.

Even though Steve teased me mercilessly as a kid it created a bond between us. Looking back I think our parents must have thought, how nice, Steve is entertaining Connie. When I was older I fully appreciated everything Steve brought to life and the people around him.

Steve was so witty and had the most entertaining work stories and jokes. During family gatherings Steve always had everyone's attention. Being the youngest cousin I was typically on the outside looking in, until one day when I was finally old enough and had free tickets and a front row seat to The Steve Freddo Show. Steve and Sharon stayed with us in Laconia because Steve was part of a band that was playing at the Highland Games at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH.

If you were lucking enough to hear some of Steve's stories do you remember the one were Steve asked Keebler's mother how she came to give him such a unique name. Basically the punch line, minus Steve's impression and well timed delivery, she named him after the brand of crackers. I hope you heard that one. I know Sharon has probably has, a few times.

Love you guys and please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. I will never forget Steve, a man I have always looked up to.

I first met Steve in the early 90's when he was hired to work on the newly formed Fugitive Squad. He enjoyed many successes while on the team, and was a key member who could always be relied upon. Steve had a wry sense of humor, but was all business when it came to his profession. I am very sorry for your loss.

I am still in shock to know Steve has passed. As a former colleague and as a retired inspector, I feel blessed to have known Steve and to have many memories of Steve's kind friendship, professional comraderie and ever-present humor. My sincere condolences are extended to his family and huge circle of friends during this sad time of loss. Take some comfort in the fact that Steve truly lived a full, passionate life of doing what he loved most - enjoying people, serving others, having fun and balancing the scales of justice. Rest well, my Friend - you have made a beautiful lasting mark on humanity and will be sorely missed.

My family and I were saddened to hear of the passing of my beloved cousin Steve. I have such fond memories from childhood of the two of us together,so many times sleeping over and playing in the woods and fields behind his house in Bolton. We were both the same age (3 months apart in age)and had many things in common. I would say Steve was the more adventurous one and certainly more mischievious than I. He taught me at age 9 when he introduced me to golf, that a 2 foot putt was called a gimme because his dad, my uncle told him that. He showed me what a hammerhead firecraker sounded like exploding, how to fire a shotgun, and later when he bought his corvette, what it felt like going 100mph down route 85. There were so many other fun things we did together in our youth. I know Steve had a highly successful career in law enforcement with numerous accomendations along the way and was loved by so many from family and friends. He was kind, generous, loyal, gregarious with an affectionate personality. He will be truely missed by so many

I have known Steve since I began with the Chief State's Attorney's Office in 1994, also as an inspector. I retired in 2007, have stayed in touch with many inspectors, both still active and retired as well. I was shocked to learn of Steve's passing. I will remember the numerous conversations we had both on the job and at the firing ranges. Steve was both honorable, dedicated and yet funny when he "could be".
Steve, may you rest in peace and to his family "May his memory be eternal"

Dear Sharon, Heather, Christy & Family

Moving out of CT in 89 made getting together difficult but I always considered Steve one of my best friends and consider all of you family. I have only great memories of early years getting together and I am so glad that I had a chance to have had a great conversation on the phone with Steve just a couple of weeks ago. I love you all, very sad to hear about the passing of my lifelong friend. My heart aches and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
