Thomas W. Dowd, Jr., 86, beloved husband of Barbara (Schultz) Dowd, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Vermillion, South Dakota on November 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas W. Dowd, Sr. and Florence (Hubert) Dowd and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska.
Thomas left college to join the U.S. Coast Guard and served honorably until his discharge in 1962. In 1964, he married Barbara Schultz, and they enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage. They lived in New Britain for a short period before moving to Enfield, where they raised their family. Tom worked in the trucking industry as a sales representative before retiring. In his leisure time, he was an avid reader, especially John Grisham, loved watching sports, especially UCONN basketball, and the New England Patriots. He and Barbara loved to travel over the years, but his greatest pride and joy was the love he had for his family. A dedicated veteran, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, he will be missed by family and friends.
Besides his wife, Barbara, of Enfield, he leaves 3 children, Julie Napolitano and her husband Robert of Chatham, MA, Thomas W. Dowd, III and his wife Erin of Jericho, VT, and Gail McManus and her husband Robert of Glastonbury; 9 grandchildren, Caroline Dobi and her husband Matt, Connor and Brendan McManus, Marley, Charlotte, and Carter Wallace, and Adeline, Mason, and Gavin Dowd; and his devoted caregiver, Janice Bogle. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael Martinson.
His family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 5, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield, with a Funeral Home Service taking place at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
