CARL E. BATES, 55 GALVA - Carl E. Bates, 55, of Galva, passed away at 1:41 a.m., Sunday, November 1, 2015 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice House in Peoria surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 14, 1960 in Kewanee, the son of Edward and Carol (Mowers) Bates. He married Pamela Holevoet on September 19, 1981 in Galva. She survives, as well as his mother, Carol of Galva, a son, Tyler Bates and a daughter, Tara (Ben) DeWolfe, both of Galva, three grandchildren, Ava, Griffin and Grady and an expected grandchild due in December. He is also survived by his siblings, Judy (Chris) Simonson of Janesville, WI., Ernie (Sarah) Bates of Lanark and Verla (Scott) Hemrick of Johns Creek, GA., and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Carrie in infancy. Carl graduated from Galva High School in 1978 and from Black Hawk East Colllege in 1980. In earlier years, he had been active in 4 H and played softball. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Galva and had participated in Cursillo #539 in Peoria. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was president of the Galva Rural Community Fire Department. He was especially proud of his children and being "Papa" to his grandchildren. Most recently, his family, friends and neighbors came together and took part in "The Most Amazing Harvest." This event has gained world-wide attention that reflects the love and support that family and friends in a small community offer and share with each other during difficult times. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 7 at Visitation Church, St. John Paul II Parish. Celebrant will be with Fr. John Burns. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 6 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Galva with a rosary being recited there at 3 p.m. Burial will be at Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. John Catholic Church or the Galva Fire Department. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.
