Alvin Gary Huenink, 81, of Lincoln, passed away January 10, 2021. Alvin was the first child of Alfred and Hilda (Kats) Huenink and born on a farm near Panama, NE on July 28, 1939. He was baptized and later joined the Holland Reformed Church in Holland, NE. Alvin attended the Panama Elementary School, District #25, and graduated from Hickman High School in 1957.

After working a year at Golds Clothing Store as a stock boy and finally a buyer, he attended four years at Central College in Pella, IA, graduating in 1962 with a major in sociology and minors in speech and Latin plus a teaching certificate. He started teaching middle school Latin and debate at Fort Dodge, IA, and later set up the sociology program at Fort Dodge Senior High which he taught until he retired in 1994, completing 32 years of teaching.

Alvin also loved singing and theater performance. He sang at his high school graduation and several weddings. While in college he was a tenor in a men's quartet and a member of Accapella Choir that toured at the "Marble Collegiate Church" in New York City. Through auditions he became a member of the Fort Dodge Men's Civic Group where he performed in several showstoppers including "South Pacific". He sang in numerous church choirs, also.

After Alvin retired in 1994, he moved back to Lincoln, NE to help care for his two deaf sisters, Eileen dying of cancer later that year. He built a non-financed house ready to accommodate his other sister, Christine, and her daughter, Melissa.

During Alvin's teaching career he was a member of local, state, and national education associations. He was vice president, then president of the local education association in 1980-81. He attended numerous conventions in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Des Moines as a voting representative of his association.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents Alfred (1981), Hilda (1992), sister Eileen Mae Huenink (1994); brother Gerald Huenink (2019). He is survived by his sisters Shirley J. (Huenink) Taylor, Phyllis (Dwaine) Andringa, and Christine A. Huenink; brother Ronald (Earlene) Huenink; sister-in-law Valerie Huenink; many nieces and nephews including Melissa (Huenink) Lile and daughter McKinzey; and his longtime companion James K. Volkmer.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday (1-14-21) Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 'O' Street. Burial in Holland Cemetery. Following the CDC COVID-19 guidelines, we will comply with social distancing seating and limited room capacity. Masks are required for all in attendance.
