Eileen Gemmell Obituary
November 30, 1924 - January 9, 2026
Eileen Fae Gemmell, 101, of Lincoln, passed away January 9, 2026. She was born November 30, 1924, in Angus, Neb., the daughter of Lawrence James and Emma (Rulla) Horner.
Eileen was baptized into the Methodist Church on November 22, 1936, in Vesta, Neb. She grew up in the Vesta community and graduated from Vesta High School in 1942, as Valedictorian of her class. Upon graduation she was a telephone operator in Tecumseh where she met her future husband Gene Gemmell who was with the LT&T construction crew. He served in the European Theatre during World War II. Upon returning home in August 1945, they were united in marriage and remained married for 69 years. To this union, three sons were born: Douglas, Kevin and Kirk.
Eileen was a Lincoln resident for over 40 years, before moving to Tecumseh, Neb., where she and her husband owned and operated Gene's Bottle Shop. They retired and moved back to Lincoln in January 1991. Before moving to Tecumseh, Eileen was employed at American Stores for 25 years. Eileen was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and the Eagles Auxiliary 147.
She is survived by her sons, Douglas, Everett, Wash. and Kevin (Jayne), Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren, Scott, Thousand Oaks, Calif., Justin (Celissa) McKinney, Texas, Courtney (Adam) Proctor, Nathan (Jamie) Gemmell, and Brandon Gemmell, all of Lincoln, Neb.; 14 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Marcia (Kent) Stubbendick and Janet (Duane) Phillippi; and special friend, Deborah Smith. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; son, Kirk; grandson, Aaron; sister, Maxine Jackson; brother, Robert Horner; sister, Pat Holt; brothers-in-law, Jim Jackson and Garland Holt; and sister-in-law, Daniel McFadden.
Memorial Services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 'O' Street, Lincoln, NE 68510. A livestream link will be available 10 minutes prior to the service at roperandsons.com.
Memorials may be given to the Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach.
