Evangeline Kouma Obituary

Evangeline "Vangie" Kouma

January 1, 1934 - December 24, 2024

LINCOLN - Evangeline "Vangie" Kouma, of Lincoln Neb., died Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Eastmont Retirement Home.

Vangie was born near Loma, Neb., on January 1, 1934, to Emma (Horky) and James Kouma. After high school, Vangie worked for the Extension Society Missionary in Oklahoma, at the Neuman Center in Lincoln, and as a secretary at an attorney's office. Vangie then decided she wanted to be a teacher and received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She taught at Eagle Elementary school in Weaverly for over 30 years. Vangie was first a classroom teacher but spent most of her career as a reading teacher. Her love for teaching inspired both of her nieces to become teachers.

Throughout her life she was able to travel with many of her friends to some wonderful places around the world.

Her greatest love was for Jesus and volunteering at her church with RCIA and other church activities. Vangie was a prime evangelist always wanting to bring the love of Jesus to others. Vangie also enjoyed baking. She loved playing cards with family and friends her whole life.

Vangie is survived by her brother, Dennis and wife, Carol Kouma of Columbus; her niece, Deb and husband, Jeff Svehla of Columbus; her niece, Kim and husband, Jerry Svehla of Columbus; her nephew, Randy and wife, Laurie Kouma of Columbus; great-nieces and nephews, Kyle, Allie, Austin, Kaelyn, Zach, Makenna, Cassie and Jordan; great-great-nephews, Grayson and Graham.

I admired Vangie and she will always be in my heart. Every time I pass Eastman I remember taking you to church and some of the church functions and a lot of breakfasts together. She was a very wonderful lady she will be missed.

I taught with Vangie at Eagle Elementary many years ago. Also, she was close friend of my Aunt Delores. She was kind and thoughtful. I always enjoyed visiting with her when I saw her at various events.

Vangie was a wonderful teacher and terrific person.
She was kind, thoughtful, and cared deeply in the interest of people, especially students. I was fortunately to be able to work with her for many years at Eagle Elementary. Bill "Pete" Peterson
