Frances Buell Obituary

Frances Elaine Buell

January 13, 1925 - December 5, 2025

Frances Elaine Buell was born on January 13, 1925. She was born on the farm near Murdock, Ne. She was the only child of Fred and Gladys Marshall Buell. She passed away on December 5, 2025.

Frances graduated as the Valedictorian of her Murdock High School class in 1941. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University where she earned her AB degree.

She taught sixth grade at Plattsmouth for two years returning to Wesleyan where she taught Trigonometry.

She was a graduate assistant and instructor at UNL from 1947 to 1951 where she taught Math. She received a Master's Degree with a math major in 1949. Her teaching career took her to North Platte High School for three years and then back to Lincoln where she taught at Lincoln High School from 1954 till her retirement in 1987. She was the Department chairman from 1964 to 1976. Frances was a pioneer in Distance Learning, teaching Geometry on Public Television in 1959 and 1960.

She belonged to many honorary and educational groups including Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women, the Nebraska State Education Associates, National Education Association, National Council of Teachers of Math and Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Mu Epsilon and Pi Gamma Mu.

Frances kept a book containing the names of every student in her classes. It contained their progress, her personal evaluation of each one and what she learned concerning their success in life. Perhaps it will be a relief to some of her former students that little book has vanished!

Following her retirement in 1987, Frances went on a long tour, traveling to Alaska.

She worked tirelessly with the Food Bank, her Women's group at St. Paul Methodist church in Lincoln, read for the Talking Books for the Blind and helping neighbors that were new residents in America.

During the years she lived in her apartment at 1332 C Street, she tutored young students in math studies. Former students reached out to her when their own children struggled with various math classes. She kindly obliged, helping yet another generation understand the world of Mathematics.

Frances moved to Gramercy Hill for several years and then to Madonna in 2017 where she greatly appreciated those who tirelessly cared for her. She enjoyed family visits and especially visits from her many former students.

Family was important to her, and she was always interested in hearing about the events in all of her family's lives.

We celebrate the influence and joy she brought to all of us.

Memorials may be directed to the Elmwood-Murdock Education Foundation or St. Paul United Methodist Church, Lincoln.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 5:30-7:00PM at Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel (4300 "O" St.)

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 11:00AM at Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel. Burial to take place at the Elmwood Cemetery.

Earlier today

I graduated from Lincoln High in 1970. Mrs. Buell was one of my math teachers. Later on, much later on, I ran into her at St. Paul Methodist church. I greeted her telling her that I was one of her students. She was pleasant but looked confused. A little while later she told me that she had gone home and looked me up in her book and that then she remembered all about me and shared what she had written.

Miss Buell was my trigonometry (and maybe geometry) teacher at Lincoln High School. Super-smart and gave us helpful instructions. I ran into her at Gramercy Hill when my mother went there in assisted living. She remembered me after all those years, and was interested in my writing. Sounds like she did not slow down after retirement--a sweet and generous person!

I was fortunate enough to be taught by Frances at Lincoln High for 3 math classes in the 70's. She was a wonderful teacher and really cared about her students. I worked at the Food Bank and remember the many times she picked up food for St. Paul United Methodist food pantry. We weighed every box of food & Frances would write the pound totals on a piece of paper as we went along. When I'd offer a hand calculator to add up her numbers, she always declined. She preferred doing it all by hand to keep her mind sharp as she put it. Old school all the way. I will never forget her.

Miss Buell was my Algebra 3 teacher, Winter 1973, and Pre-Calculus (Trigonometry & Analytic Geometry) teacher, 1973-1974, at Lincoln High School. She is one of the few teachers that I still remember from my years at LHS. To bad the little book is lost because I'd love to know what she thought of me. I ended up as an electrical engineer ... but I'm not sure too many would have expected that.

My thoughts and prayers to Frances's family and friends.

Yesterday

I became acquainted with Frances in 1950-51 when she taught Youth Sunday School class at Saint Paul UMC; while she finished her studies. Years later she shared with me, that list of students in that class - amazing lady. I remember her working with the Food Bank through St. Paul and her dedication to typing the services in Braille, for the vision impaired at church. It was always what Frances could do for others. My son Rob also was a student of hers at LHS and made Math a lot easier for him too, Blessings and Peace to a Grand Lady.

Ms. Buell was my geometry teacher at LHS in 1969. This was during a turbulent time in my life. But she was a bright spot in my life. She was a sweet and caring woman. May light perpetual shine upon her.

Miss Buell was my geometry teacher at Lincoln High School.
The very best teacher for a subject that required lots of study.
She was always helpful and interested in how her students were doing.
I also visited her at Madonna. She was well liked and quite happy to see a student who took time to visit. I'll always think of her.

One of the best teachers I ever had. During my sophomore year at Lincoln High in 1970, she patiently helped me understand geometry.
Was privileged to perform for her at Gramercy hill many years later.

My husband, Jerry Copley, had her as one of his teachers at Lincoln High. They reconnected through Eastern Star years ago. They both enjoyed talking about their time at Lincoln High. She was a very kind and caring person.
