Howard Kaye Obituary

Howard Kaye

December 26, 1942 - October 8, 2022

Howard Kaye died suddenly at home on 8 October 2022. He was born in Los Angeles to Harriet and Arthur L. Kaye on 26 December 1942. Howard grew up climbing the backyard avocado tree with his little sister, Lorri. He graduated from Stanford University, received a Ph.D. from Columbia, and began teaching at Cornell University. He married Fran in 1972. "She wanted no fetchings. His arms would be her necklace and her belt, the final fortune of their desire."

Deciding he didn't really like teaching English, he returned to his first love, art. He moved to Nebraska in 1977, where he taught calligraphy and watercolor at Southeast Community College and developed a career as a watercolor painter. He showed his work in more than 300 regional and national juried shows and was a member of both the Burkholder Gallery and Impact Nebraska Artists, as well as a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor USA. He was also a fine potter and illustrator.

Howard was an impressive cook who for many years opened his kitchen and his home to people who were homeless, recently released from prison, or otherwise vulnerable. A quiet, self-contained man, he acted not out of religious conviction or idealistic belief, but rather knowing that in a society of pernicious inequality, generosity was the only decent response.

Howard is survived by his wife, Fran, Lincoln; his son Joel (Stephanie Morris), Calgary, Alberta; his granddaughter Quincey Walking Bull, Lincoln; his nephew Tom Brown, New York; and Gretchen Albers and family, Cochrane, Alberta.

Celebration of life at a later date. Memorials to the Burkholder Project, 719 P St., Lincoln, NE 68508 or to Nebraska Public Media.

Dear Fran, Joel, & family, I just learned of Howard's passing & I am so sad. Howard taught me watercolor painting at SCC & we were in the Lincoln Artists' Guild together. He was incredibly talented. I so admired his work. I also admired what a kind person Howard was. Such a gentle man. His humor showed in his work as well. I'll never forget his self-portrait "Belly"! My sympathies to you all.

When I was working at Cheney Elementary School, when Joel was a 2nd grader, Howard was so kind to me. My favorite memories of that year was the Kaye family. Condolences to Fran and Joel, and their loved ones.

Fran: I'm so sorry to hear about Howard's death. I'm June Levine's daughter. For our wedding 40 years ago, she gave us this wonderful painting, which I see first thing every morning when I wake up. I've had a bit of Howard in my life for a long time, and it gives me pleasure. With sympathy, Jane

Dear Fran,

I am so sorry to read that Howard has passed. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Many times I have driven down highway 2 and gazed across the grass to the old highway and thought of you two. Two happy people in a marriage that influenced so many with your goodwill, generosity, and integrity. You moved me just by my seeing and feeling the harmony sitting in your living room. I have thought of you and that day many times and how, unknown to you, your beautiful, rich life in the little old house along the old highway made a mark on me.

Grateful to have briefly crossed your and Howard´s path,

-Heidi Hall (one of your Freshman English students cerca 1978).
