Dr. James Styner

July 22, 1937 – January 22, 2024

Dr. James Styner MD, FACS, died peacefully at his home on January 22, 2024, after a long illness.

Dr. Styner was a fixture in the Lincoln medical community, best known for being a pioneering founder of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). He served the community as an orthopedic surgeon, partner at the Lincoln Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center, instructor at the Creighton University School of Medicine, and physician for the Cornhusker football team. He founded multiple workers compensation clinics in Southern California, and served in multiple medical missionaries to Cusco, Peru. The American College of Surgeons Award for Meritorious Service is named in his honor. He was a United States Navy veteran, an avid diver, skier, sailor, outdoorsman, and artist.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlene; as well as his parents, Ken and Hazel. Shortly after passing, he was joined in death by his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his current wife, Lily; his sister, Mary Lou; his children: Chris, Ken, Randy, and Kim; and his grandsons: James and Tobin.

A memorial service will be held at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery on July 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the ACS Trauma Education Fund. "Non omnis moriar" - Not all of me will die.

He was a great doctor. He put my leg back together after several failed attempts by other surgeons and being told it needed to be amputated. That was 50 years ago and I still am walking on both legs. Forever grateful to this man.
