Jean Murphy Obituary
Jean Carol Murphy
November 4, 1932 - March 23, 2025
Jean Carol Murphy, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2025 at the age of 92. She was surrounded by love, and lived a full and vibrant life that touched the hearts of many.
Born in Syracuse, Nebraska to Alton and Jessie Delong, Jean had a deep appreciation for family, community, and the arts. In high school she met the love of her life, Robert Murphy, and together they shared nearly 70 years of joyful marriage; a true American love-story.
A proud supporter of the Lincoln Symphony, she loved music and the arts. Jean graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where she pursued her love of literature and theatre. A talented singer, pianist, and actress, Jean joined a music fraternity where she performed the lead in "The Little Foxes".She was an avid reader, often finishing a book a week. Her passions were as wide ranging as they were classy. Her legendary sweet tooth was part of her charm; cinnamon roll breakfasts and take-home treats were her way of sharing love.
Jean had a rare gift for friendship; the people who loved her most described her as "Glinda the Good Witch". Her warmth and charisma were palpable in every interaction, and she formed lifelong bonds with genuine kindness and generosity. We do not often think of friendship as an innate gift, but Jean Carol personified it in both quality and quantity. Above all, she cherished Bob and their relationship.
Jean Carol eventually moved to Montereau in Tulsa, Oklahoma to be near family. She quickly became a beloved member of the community, forming connections with residents, staff, and dedicated caregivers whom she held dear. She rarely missed movie nights and was always ready to welcome a friend for a visit. True to form, she was on the go until the end; she bought goodies at the Amish store just days before her passing.
She is survived by her children, Julie Murphy and Christopher Murphy (Ben Stewart), and her granddaughter, Jessie Comstock (Manolo Anderson). She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and son, Brian.
A celebration of her life will be held at Westminster Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln, NE, on June 7, 2025 at 11 a.m. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Lincoln Symphony Orchestra.
