Henry I. Wohl

BURLINGTON - Henry I. Wohl, 86, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Burlington Memorial Hospital. He was born November 4, 1918, in Nuremberg, Germany, to Paul and Emma (nee: Tuchmann) Wohl. Henry lived in Nuremberg, Germany until the age of 16. He was sent to Grange Neuf Agricultural College in Switzerland to escape the Nazies. It was there that he learned about the Catholic faith and he converted to Catholicism on December 8, 1938, at the age of 20. Henry moved with his family to America via England and worked on a farm until he was drafted into the American army soon after December 7, 1941. He served with the United States Army Intelligence for about four years. He spoke English, French, and German fluently. After the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the GI Bill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. His interest was soil testing and he worked for a number of companies. In July of 1954, he married Marcella Witte of Glenview, Ill. This past summer, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Henry and Marcella lived in Olympia, Wash., where Henry taught at St. Martin's College. Later, they lived in Maryland, where he did soil testing and in 1959, the family moved to Burlington. Henry equipped a soil testing lab in his home and took soil samples from farms around the State of Wisconsin. He loved being outside and many of his clients became good friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marcella Wohl; daughters, Maria (Lee) Thompson of Franklin and Christine (Edward) Chandler of Glendale; grandchildren, Lee and Christine Thompson, Rebecca, Marcella, Mary Elizabeth, and Andrew Chandler; sister, Hilde (Julius) Adler of Madison; and a number of nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at 12 p.m. with Rev. Jeff Thielen officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home on Wednesday from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mary's Parish in Burlington. Henry's faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He will be missed.
