Richard Anderson Obituary

Richard Lowell Anderson

February 8, 1930 - November 5, 2024

Richard "Dick" Lowell Anderson, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

Dick was the son of Harley and Lillian Anderson of Racine, Wisconsin, where he was born and raised. He graduated from Washington Park High School and went on to Wheaton College to graduate with a BA in English Literature. There, he met the love of his life, Maxine Joyce Anderson of Waukomis, Oklahoma and they married February 6, 1953. After serving two years in the army, Dick and Max returned to Racine to raise their family of four daughters. They went on to enjoy 71 years of a wonderful adventure together.

Dick loved life and had many interests. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His career as a teacher and middle school principal in the Racine Public Schools spanned 35 years, and he was always ready for camping, canoeing, and singing around the campfire. His interest in literature resulted in a vast library, and books were like old, treasured friends.

However, it was his love of serving God with his musical talents that truly defined Dick. His lifelong service included directing choirs, leading worship, and mentoring other musicians along the way. He served 38 years as choir director at Calvary Memorial Church in Racine (succeeding his father); 10 years as choir director for the Sun City Singers in Georgetown, TX; and even led worship for 2 years at his senior living facility in Austin, TX. Dick could play almost any instrument he picked up, and wherever he was, there was music and singing!

In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his precious daughter, Peggy Sue Anderson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Maxine Joyce Anderson; his sister Jule Gast, of Baroda, MI; his daughters Kathleen Joyce Young (Tim) of Lansing, MI, Laurel Beth Daniel (Bill) of St. Simons Island, GA, and Erin Alaine Anderson of Round Rock, TX; his 10 Grandchildren; and his 10 Great Grandchildren (plus 2 more on the way.).

Dick ended every concert with the Sun City Singers with a personal arrangement of the Irish Blessing. It was his favorite finale, and the words seem appropriate as we say goodbye to him.

May the road rise to meet you,.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,.

The rain fall soft upon your fields,.

And until we meet again,.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

A private burial service for the family will take place at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin at a future date.

Many thanks to our nurses and care teams at Georgia Hospice Care of Brunswick, GA and Vitality Living Frederica of St. Simons Island, GA.

Dick was a wonderful person. I was fortunate to have served with him as an assistant principal while he was principal at Jerstad - Agerholm Middle School. He was a great educator and person, always following God´s way, and thereby leading by example.
Our condolences to his family and friends.

We remember Dick and Maxine from years in the past at Calvary Memorial Church in Racine, Wisconsin. We will be praying for Maxine and the family. He was a blessing to us as a 'young couple' and an example for us to follow. May God bless your precious family.

Great memories of choir rehearsals at CMC with Dick leading us. He and Max were faithful in the work of the Lord. Praying for family at this time.

My condolences to the family. Mr. Anderson was my middle school principal. He was a fair, kind and an exceptional man. People like Mr Anderson truly make a difference in young lives. Almost 50 years later his positive impression remains with me.
