Spartanburg, S.C. – Robert Lee Slone, Jr., 86, died Friday morning, June 26, 2009, at Regional Hospice Home. Born in Prestonsburg, Ky., February 26, 1923. Mr. Slone was a son of the late Robert L. and Grace Haywood Slone, Sr. He was a registered professional engineer in the state of Wisconsin and was manager of Plant Engineering for American Motors Corporation. Mr. Slone served in the United States Army serving in World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Slone was a life member of Free and Accepted Masons and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. He is survived by three daughters, Linda (John) Lamb of Pinehurst, N.C., Brenda (Mike) Hooker of Moore, S.C., Diana (Mike) Homburg and of Union Grove; a brother, Bernard Slone of Mishawaka, Ind.; five grandchildren, John E. Lamb, Jr. (J.J.) of S.C., Matthew S. Lamb of N.C., Amanda (Joel) Price of Spartanburg, S.C., Tom (Michelle) Hribar of Franksville, and Virginia Dare (Chuck) Gehrand of Union Grove; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Slone was predeceased in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice Vivian (nee: Howard) Slone; a sister, Virginia Dare Slone; a brother, William Slone; and his beloved dog, Libby. Serving as pallbearers are John Lamb, Mike Hooker, Mike Homburg, J.J. Lamb, Tom Hribar and Joel Price. A visitation will be held Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church conducted by Reverend Chris Snellgrove. Burial will immediately follow in Walnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
