Barbara Chandler Obituary

Chandler, Barbara (Nee Gates ) Of Milwaukee; longtime resident of Elm Grove. Born April 30, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. Daughter of Payson and Doris Gates. Barbara died on November 5, 2015. She was preceded in death by beloved and devoted husband, Kensal Chandler. Survived by children Richard (Heidi Pankoke) of Madison, John (Mary) of Whitefish Bay, and Susan (Bruce McLellan) of Edina, MN; and grandchildren Katherine McLellan, Claire and Allison Chandler, and Jack and Jennifer Chandler. Also survived by sister Constance Gates Cutter of Cambridge, MA and preceded in death by sister Eleanor Gates. Barbara grew up in Scarsdale, NY, attended Swarthmore College, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1947 with a B.A. in English. Barbara and Ken were married in 1948 and lived in Milwaukee, Stockton, CA, and Brantford, Ontario before moving to Elm Grove, where she worked at the Elm Grove Library for many years. She deeply loved being a mother and grandmother; she enthusiastically supported her children, embraced their activities and friends, and celebrated the births and development of each grandchild. Barbara enjoyed books and reading, traveling, playing tennis, and volunteering. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Private burial. Memorials preferred to the Friends of the Elm Grove Library.

Dear Chandler's,

I'd like to extend my sincere condolences on the passing of your mom. I have great memories of growing up across the street from your family when we moved to Elm Grove in 1966. Your parents were such wonderfully kind people!
