Bill Gerrard Obituary

Gerrard, Bill Michael William Gerrard (Bill) of La Crosse, WI passed away peacefully on Friday, April 7, 2017 surrounded by his family. Bill was born July 23, 1924 in La Crosse, WI. He attended Aquinas High School, Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated from the University Wisconsin Madison in 1947 with a degree in Business. He founded Gerrard Realty Corp. in La Crosse, WI in 1954, his legacy thrives today at Gerrard Hoeschler Realtors. He was an entrepreneur, real estate broker, and lobbyist. He worked tirelessly to elect two of Wisconsin's most influential governors, Patrick Lucey and Tommy Thompson. Wisconsin benefited from his wisdom, expertise, and way with people. In the 1960s, he served several terms on the Wisconsin Real Estate Examing Board. In the early 1970s, he served as party chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. His fundraising skills helped strengthen the party state wide. In the 1970s and 80s, Bill served two terms on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. He was appointed by Governor Lucy and reappointed by Governor Dreyfus. While serving as chair of the Real Estate Committee, Bill was instrumental in developing the University of Wisconsin Madison Research Park, an area to house the cutting-edge research done at UW Madison. He was affectionately known in Wisconsin political circles as Uncle Billy. He was a deal-maker, but also always a champion for those less fortunate. He was a cherished father and grandfather, filled with funny expressions and always asked "what can I do for you" and really meant it. To his children, grandchildren, and friends, he was larger than life; the last of a great generation. He was a generous and gracious gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Merrylyn (Murphy) Gerrard, his wife Anna Nancy Hyde Gerrard and his son Michael William Gerrard Jr. He is survived by his sister Ann (Gerrard) Harmon, his children Mary Ann, Nancy (Rick Staff), Paul, Katherine, and Peter Gerrard. Grandchildren Gretchen Gerrard, Avery, Will, and Fritz Scheuch, Erin and Anna Smith, Alex, Grace, and Olivia Gerrard, Laura, Lucas and Giana Gerrard. If you would like to make a contribution in Bill's name, contributions can be sent to: JDRF - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (granddaughter affected) The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (granddaughter affected) The Autism Foundation (grandson affected) The Gerrard family would like to give special thanks to Bernice Frisch, his incredible Madison support; his wonderful nurse Tami Benson; caregivers Margaret O'Meara and Steve Scheuch; and CNAs Christy and Jen. Bill was a very Special person. He liked everyone and no one knew when he was having a bad day. He gave his Clients his all. He loved the telephone. So wonderful that daughter Nancy has successfully carried on Gerrard Realty in La Crosse. He is with the Lord now along with 2 very Special people that worked for him for years being Clem Feldbruegge and Ambrose Coughlin. They were Friends for Life!

Bill was the go to person for many who wanted things to happen in Wisconsin and by many accounts, he was the right choice. He also was famous for his stories and his backslapping, tools of the trade he practiced with such skill. Sympathy is extended to the entire family but especially to Mary Ann, a dedicated and caring daughter.

I didn't know Bill personally. I met him one Sunday at Newman when he sat in front of me and Sr Luanne Durst. He talked with us briefly, but made sure we knew how much he liked Fr Billy Dodge! ! (WE like him, too!) It always made me smile to see him in church with 2 of his sons and his daughter. It ALWAYS warmed my heart as they sat with their arm around his shoulder !
You could tell he was loved! I had a feeling that something was going on with him, as they had not been at Newman for a few weeks.
I was sad when I read he had passed. I can't quite imagine that 15 minutes will be enough time for the eulogies on Saturday!
May he rest in peace! !!
Sincerely, Louise Sonday, Sparta

Bill's obituary was a wonderfully written tribute to a very special man who touched my life, as he did so many. He was a deal maker in the best sense of the word, working to make positive things happen, trying to achieve consensus, and always keeping friendships in the process. He loved his community, loved the give and take of politics and loved to be involved. Most of all, he loved his family and constantly talked of their accomplishments. Anyone who knew Bill will never forget him. He was a legend.

So sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. Bill was a mentor and a friend. His reputation as a leader of the Democratic Party and a lobbyist are unequaled. He always had a smile and a kind word - and was always interested in what I had to say. Not many in the world like Bill!

He was a good friend of my father Ray Marotte of Wauwatosa Realty. I have fond memories of visiting the family home when I was a child. May he rest in peace with all the other Wisconsin realtors in heaven.

To all my Gerrard cousins, Your dad, my Uncle Bill, always made me smile. From childhood he called Maryann his "little treasure" and that she was throughout his entire life. He excelled in so much but his greatest accomplishment was his children. He truly loved you all. His smile and humor will always be remembered. My prayers are with all of you as you say good-bye to your wonderful father.

An exceptionally true gentleman, whose many contributions to the city and the state made lasting impressions. He was also a great real estate broker/owner, who with that smile of his kept all his agents wanting to make him proud. My condolences to the family!
