Craig Sandgren Obituary

Sandgren, Craig D. Dec. 24, 2011, age 60 years. Residence Shorewood. Beloved husband of Maria A. Terres-Sandgren. Loving father of Kirsten Helen Sandgren. Dear brother of Kent (Karen), Janis and Nancy Sandgren. Further survived by nieces, one nephew, other relatives, colleagues, students and many friends. Craig grew up in the Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota. After completing two degrees there his love of nature and particularly of all things aquatic lead him to a PhD at the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories. Upon his return to the Midwest he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Department of Biology where he served for over twenty-five years, including five years as department chair. He inspired students, introducing them to the rarefied world of algae, aquatic ecology, plankton, seaweeds, intertidal life, lake studies and more. His work included fieldwork on Lake Michigan, Midwestern northern lakes and of course, the Pacific Northwest. He also expressed his love of the outdoors through fishing, hunting, and rambles through the woods. His legacy lives on in his students and in his daughter, Kirsten. He adored his wife and daughter with whom he shared the love of music, nature and life - he will be sorely missed. The family wishes to extend thanks to his doctors, their wonderful staff, and to the Aurora VNA Hospice for their exquisite care of Craig throughout his illness. We also thank our family members and friends for their support through this difficult time. Please join Craig's family for a Celebration of His Life at Northshore Funeral Services Chapel on Monday, January 2, 2012, from 1:00-4:00 PM. If desired, memorials appreciated to: University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories Marine Life Endowment Fund, 620 University Road, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.

I've lost a good friend and a trusted colleague. So many times over the past 25 years, I've gone to Craig for advice on aquatic biology, from the subcellular to the ecological. Professionally, Craig's greatest legacy is the long parade of students whose lives he so greatly influenced. He took them places they never would have gone, and taught them things they never would have known. I miss my friend. I can't fill Craig's shoes, but I hope to do what I can to follow his example.

God bless you Doc. Thank you for the mornings of chocolate milk and donuts, times at the Kemp field station, on Lake Michigan, buried in the lab, supporting my work...and in the years after leaving, for the coffee, breakfasts, and conversations about life and careers. Maria and Kirsten...He really loved you both and lit up anytime the conversation turned your way. My deepest sympathies for you loss.

I so enjoyed my time with Craig during a Friday Harbor algae adventure one summer (several years ago now). I was a master's student at UWM, and he taught me how to grow algae for my project. He was a gifted teacher and an inspiration for enjoying the wonder of science. Deepest sympathy for your loss.

Dear Maria and Kirsten,
One of my fondest memories of Craig was when we first moved to Milwaukee, we all would go contra dancing at the VFW on Wilson. I remember a moment where Maria and Chuck were playing music and Craig and I were dancing partners. Those were such great times. We will always remember Craig fondly.
