Daniel Deter Obituary

Daniel Paul Deter

With aching hearts, the family of Daniel Paul Deter were with him as he died peacefully on February 4, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles William Deter. He is survived by his mother, Susan Paul Deter of Birmingham, Alabama; wife, Alison Cornell Blair of River Hills, Wisconsin; children, Brett Daniel Deter and his wife Jackie of Bayside, Wisconsin, Ali Nicole Deter of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Blair Laing Ferre and her husband Adrien of Paris, France, Andrew Gordon Laing of Washington D.C.; and brothers, Scott William Deter and his wife Margaret of Naperville, Illinois, and David George Deter and his wife Mandy of Birmingham, Alabama.

Dan was born in Sioux City, Iowa on April 9, 1958 to Charles William Deter and Susan Paul Deter. His brothers and children fondly remember him as a man with a deep love and care for them and a generous heart to anyone and everyone he ever met. Dan graduated from Southern Methodist University, followed in his father's footsteps at The Travelers Insurance Company and, finally, retired from a successful career in institutional money management. He never turned down an opportunity to mentor others in his profession. Dan's joy and passion for fishing and hunting were surpassed only by his love for the Green Bay Packers and the Alabama Crimson Tide! The family cottage on Crystal Lake was a respite for him where he welcomed many friends. Dan began serving on the Board of Directors of the Crystal Lake Association in 2018.

Family will greet friends on Saturday, February 8, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM, at Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 E. Capitol Drive, in Shorewood. A service honoring Dan's life will take place immediately following at 4:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials in Dan's name be made to Pheasants Forever, 1783 Buerkle Circle, St. Paul, MN 55110.

"The best portion of a good man's life; his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and of love." William Wordsworth

I just learned of Dan's passing. He was a generous and good friend for many years. I've attached a photo taken of us at Dan's hunting club after a bird shoot. One of my favorite memories. My condolences to all of his family.

I am very sad to hear of Dan's passing. Like Todd Bitzer and many of us, Dan got me into this business in 1989. More importantly, he influenced an entire generation of sales people in our business and was a legend in the business. Easy smile, generous disposition, positive attitude, patient heart, business leader, family man are only some of the wonderful attributes Dan had. He was really a relationship guy but with the intelligence and EQ to read his audience and deliver what they needed. Look at all the PFAMCO alumni that have had successful careers and Dan would be at the top of getting them in the business and influencing their future success. A few years ago, we were at the LCG Associates Holiday Party in Atlanta and had a small reunion( Deter, Devore, Bitzer, Skillman, Clark). I will always remember that moment and how happy he was smiling and holding court! May you rest in peace!

I will be forever grateful to my friend Dan Deter for giving me my start in the business. When others said no, Dan took the timed, took a risk, and help a young kid from Georgia launch his career. No words can express my sadness at learning of Dan's passing. Way too soon my friend! Thank you for everything that you did for me - You will be missed by many in our business.

It's times like this when you wish 37 yrs hadn't gone by since you saw your friend or 5 yrs since we talked on the phone. When Dan and i were 17, 18 and 19 yrs old we were connected at the hip, we did everything together. We had our enduro motorcycles we rode together, same group of friends from church, we shared our lives together. RIP my friend, my prayers are with you and your family. We traveled different paths as adults but I always was thinking about you. So many "GREAT" memories - Murph

Jeff and I would like to extend our condolences to the family. We have enjoyed numerous social events with Dan, concluding with last summer's pontoon ride with John, Shelly and Dan. Although we have only known Dan a brief time we can say that we knew him to be: generous, fun-loving, sincere with a kind and caring heart. We will miss him.

God bless,
Jeff and Debbie Bird

Dan was always nice to me and allowed me to launch my boat from his property. He was one of the nice guys at the Lake. Too young to leave us.

You'll be sadly missed, but always remembered with a smile. We loved you for your energy and your generosity of spirit. I was cold once when we were visiting, and you gave me one of your favorite sweaters to wear. When I tried to give it back, you refused. I took it home and wore it for years. I thought of you every time I put it on. Enough said.
