Edward Berkenkotter Obituary

A man of profound Catholic Faith, passed away at the age of 92 on December 11, 2004, in the presence of his Children, joining his wife, the late Genevieve Berkenkotter. He is the loving father of Joanne (Robert) Hoelscher of Ballwin, MO, Thomas (Mary Helen) Berkenkotter of Rockport, TX, Kay (John) Rucolas of Merrimac, WI, John (Bernadette) Berkenkotter of Glenview, IL, Mary (Lloyd) Westover of Woodstock, IL, and the late Donna Peterson. Loving father-in-law of Fred Peterson. Proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren; Jeffrey, Paul, Kathy, Mark, Patricia, Jennifer, Michael, Annie, Julie, Carrie, Vincent, Leslie, John, Gretchen, Erin, Michael, Susie and Brian. He is further survived by 13 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Edward was born in Milwaukee on June 12, 1912 and educated at Marquette University. For 30 years he was the owner of Dover Industrial Chrome Plating. In 1946 he received the Big E for excellence from the Department of the Navy. Edward was a generous and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who offered his time, money and leadership in the following organizations: Knights of Columbus, Big Brothers, Lions Club, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Holy Name Society, Boy Scouts (Edward was an Eagle Scout himself) and Parish Council.

A Bereavement Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 14, at 9:00 AM in Elmwood Park, IL. at St. Celestine's Catholic Church. A visitation will follow on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until a 1:30 PM Catholic Prayer Service at the Feerick Funeral Home. Interment will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery. In loving memory of Edward, memorials in his name may be made to Holy Rosary Church, Feed the Poor Program, 351 East 113th Street, Chicago, IL 60628.

All the Charney's fondly remember our dear next door neighbors from Churchill Street in Morton Grove. Mr. Berkenkotter and Johnnie had the most precisely trimmed hedges and the greenest lawns in the entire metropolitan area. Condolences from Lillian, Brenda, Michael, David, and Davida.
